HELP!!! Wood

I would probably turn and sand it to 180 and then soak it overnight. Then I would just need to sand (not real deep) to get it finished off. If I needed it, I could use more of the stain for areas that are too light.

Well its been a long process ....Two calls broke on the lathe, mad dog burls tried to help and sent me some wood from astrailia that was dark purple.... A BIG THANK YOU to him for being so kind........yet when I turned it it just looked dark...could not see the purple at all so I went back a 4th time and this is it........

Yes , it has a red wine look to it....as do most things in my shop now......
