My new apprentice...

I may have finally got something to catch my sons interest in turning calls. Here he is drilling his blank yesterday.



He was relentless when I got home from work today..."Are we going into the shop tonight Dad?" "Can I work on my call?"

I had planned to work on some other stuff tonight, but I had to give in. Hopefully he keeps an interest. Here is Tyler turning his first predator call. I had him draw a picture of what he wanted it to look like last night after drilling his blank. You can see it pinned up in front of him.



And the chips are flying after a ton of coaching. I helped him a lot on his first call, but had him do as much as I possibly could.



Cleaning up...he loves using the shop-vac to clean up all of the dust. He wanted to stop turning half way through turning his call just to vacuum. Now if we could just get him to find that kind of interest in keeping his room clean



And the almost finished call going on his lanyard prematurely...we still need to finish the mouthpiece as well as the inside of the call and place the reed in it.



I forgot to get a picture of just the call, but it is actually a pretty neat design with an unusual lanyard groove

I also told him if he is going to make a predtaor call he has to go out with me and use it. He had no problem with this since I was thinking about going out Sunday. I don't think Mom will approve of him missing church and Sunday school though. I may just have to go out on Saturday instead. We'll see what the weather is doing.

I have to get him a dust mask before he turns anything else too. That is one of the reasons I tried to put off his turning until the weekend, I couldn't resist his desire to turn his call though. At least he had a good face mask and ear protection on.

This is great! I love kids and love seeing them do things besides sit in front of the tube or 'puter, especially when it's with their mom or dad.

Well he has a ways to go before he starts filling any orders for me but it certainly isn't out of the questions way down the road if he holds an interest for it. We'll see where I can get him and I will post up a pic of his call this weekend when we get it all finished up.

As far as the clock...I know the battery is dead. That clock came from North Carolina when my Grandmother passed away a few years ago. I keep it there and look behind me at the other clock on the wall for the time. Believe it or not the other clock doesn't have the right time either. I never changed it when day light savings time came around. I guess I'd rather not know what time it really is. Or I have to subtract an hour everytime I look. That's how I keep my math skills sharp

Sure looks like Tyler is having a good time and made a good looking call.  Now you will have to be careful or he will be making his own calls and you will be the one watching.

Thats cool you have him out there turning .  my daughter loves to make calls also, if she keeps going out there to turn them I will have to get another lathe.  Kids learn alot when they are allowed to do things, some parents are scared to let there kids do anything for fear of getting hurt.
