To let Barry know what a ripe Persimmon looks like I took a couple of picture while Deer Hunting this past weekend.

The Deer are eating them as fast as they hit the ground, CC

Born and raised in the southern highlands of Appalachia, I'm just an ol' country boy who enjoys calling coyotes... nothing more, nothing less.

So what do they taste like .  Kinda/sorta look like crab apples but I ain't eating a green one[I still don't know why but Straycat has cured me] :laf:   These things grow like everywhere down there .  Man that would be like baiting I'm thinking but legal.
   Once again thanks. :bowingsmilie:
I say what I think not think what I say.

I think a crabapple is very is a good comparison but the texture is different kinda tart like a crap apple. My neighbor to my property has one growing and got some seed from him last year . got about 10 seeds only one to propigate. tree was planted in may and the tree is now about 2 feet tall. i hear can be like 10 years before they fruit. You have to put them in substrate or or winter over in the fridge or cold area and then soak for several days or use dand paper to break the husk on the seed.  I want to plany a variety called fuyu(insert comment here freely) they get the size  of a baseball, are a japanese variety

My first encounter with a persimmon was a "buddy" handing me one and saying try this.... I didn't know your gums could curl back from your teeth!  :alscalls:   I guess I was about 14 at the time.  There are male and female trees.. some bearing fruit and others not... the wood is very hard... they used to use it for golf drivers.
Yotehntr calls... put something pretty on your lips

crab apples to persimmons are like lobsters to crawdads, lol.

after the frost persimmons are sposed to be good...

Carolina Coyote

Persimmons after frost are good and the make good Jelly, they have a sweet taste better that a Crab apple, but when green are very bitter and will make your mouth pucker up, The wild life love them. I am not sure about the male and female but there are some that will never produce, they are kind of a mystery. cc

its a male and female , when i was trying to get the seed to propigate they talked about the male and female trees and need a male ... welll u know the story cross pollination and all. the females produce the fruit. Gonna try to get some more and grow a bunch and put them in a field I have just for that reason

Were did you get the info on the male and female, I have heard that you can Graft the trees that don't produce, I understand the cross pollination but we have places that all the trees within 400 or 500 yards produce and then place that don;t produce,   do you know if there is a way to tell the difference in male or female? I know people that grow trees that would love to have that information. cc

My laughing has cost me more than one bow shot over the years at deer. I don't know why they spook  :shrug:Jimmie

My guess is they saw your face. I get spooked every now and then when I see you as well. Why would a deer be any different.  :laf:

My first time with a persimmon was very similar to Yotehnters. We were in Duncan, Oklahoma at my great grandmothers house and my dad handed me this little green fruit and told me to eat it. I was just 8 years old and couldn't believe what was happening to my mouth. Looking back on it makes me think it was very similar to squeezing a tube of Preparation H in your mouth.  :eyebrownod:

Just  look underneath the leaves. :alscalls:

Persimmon trees are usually either male or female, but some trees have both male and female flowers. On male plants, especially, occasional perfect (bisexual) flowers occur, producing an atypical fruit. A tree's sexual expression can vary from one year to the other. Many cultivars are parthenocarpic (setting seedless fruit without pollination), although some climates require pollination for adequate production. When plants not needing pollination are pollinated, they will produce fruits with seeds and may be larger and have a different flavor and texture than do their seedless counterparts.
http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/persimmon.html is the link and found some of it while looking thru nuseries talking about planting diff varieties to get pollination hope this helps. Mine I grew from seed this spring is now 25 inches and i hope it isnt a male . but probably wont produce with a female. hope the bees hit the neighbor tree and mine together :alscalls: :alscalls:other wise . If hand to sand paper the husk to get to start growing, or stratify them. got any seed that are good u wanna send up message me . wanna try to plant a bunch more on my place., will send $$$ for u to mail the seeds. thanks

that should read without a female
