Grandson Josh scores on a great 10 pointer

My grandson, Josh, who has had his share of success bowhunting in a relatively short time, really put the smack on a great 10 point buck about a week ago.  Interesting story connected to this buck though.  Josh took  shot at an inadvisable angle on this same buck several weeks ago, but made what he thought was a lethal hit. The buck did a high jump, leg kick, indicating a hard hit. It was just before dark, and when Josh went to the last place he saw him, there was a tremendous pile of lung material and blood.  It got total dark and he gave up the search until morning. He came back two straight days but could not find the buck.  Then about two days later, he showed back up on his trail cam again, apparently none the worse for wear.  About a week ago, he got another shot at the buck at a good angle, and hit him perfect with a pass through shot, and was able to find him quickly.  He rough scored in the high 150's, and when he skinned him out for the taxidermist, he found his original mechanical broadhead embedded in the upper lobe of the lung.  Obviously, deer have the ability to close off an injured section of a lung, and live right on with the remaining lung they have.  He is a happy hunter, but I advised him to vow to never take a questionable angle shot with the bow again, as we owe these magnificent creatures more than that. Nice buck.   I have only heard bad things about mechanical  broadheads.   Josh's story is typical.   I won't use them.

That is an awesome looking buck.  What kind of mechanical was he using?

I use mechanicals in the crossbow & haven't had a failure so far.

I used the Spitfire mechanicals for a few years with success, but didn't like them. When shot from an elevated stand, the arrow would pass through a deer at a different angle than I had shot, ie. I have had the arrow, shot from elevation, to almost level out when passing through the deer and just be laying on the ground on the other side. When my last one went through a deer, I quit using them and switched to Muzzys. I hear the Rage mechanicals do pretty well though.

I have use NAP spitfires and hit nothing but ribs and didnt get a pass thru, I like the Muzzy , I am shooting the RAGE two blade 2 in cutting diameter, I attached a link form the paper that shows a chasm of a wound by the 2 in rage .
