Gov. Lynch declares state of emergency

CONCORD - 5:52 p.m. - Gov. John Lynch declared a state of emergency for New Hampshire this afternoon in an effort to make all state and federal resources available as the state prepares for the arrival of Hurricane Irene.

The Governor today also asked President Obama to declare a pre-landfall emergency disaster declaration for the state. A federal emergency declaration is necessary to provide federal support to the state during the storm.

The National Guard is on state active duty and is ready to provide assistance as needed.

The Department of Transportation has canceled all weekend road construction work, removed barriers to open travel lanes and has been engaged in removing debris from storm drains and catch basins.

Over the last several days, the Department of Environmental Services has been managing water flow through state run dams and working with private dam owners to lower dam levels in an effort to prevent flooding.

NH FISH AND GAME - 12:27 p.m. - Limited search and rescue during storm

CONCORD - The state Fish and Game Department has warned that rescue workers may not respond to help those who ignore hurricane warnings.

“It is unlikely that search and rescue operations will be feasible during the height of the storm,” Fish and Game executive director Glenn Normandeau said at noontime.

Fishermen, hikers, campers and boaters are urged to get home before the storm hits.

“For your safety and the safety of rescue personnel, get out of the woods and off the water by Saturday evening,” Normandeau said.

NH STATE PARKS - 12:26 p.m.

CONCORD â€" All New Hampshire State Parks and Historical Sites will close Saturday evening at 6 p.m. in preparation for the arrival of Hurricane Irene, which will begin impact the state with heavy rains and high winds Sunday morning.

Gov. John Lynch today convened state emergency management officials and agency heads to discuss New Hampshire's preparations for the arrival of Hurricane Irene this weekend.

The Department of Resources and Economic Development is closing all of the State Parks â€" this includes all State Beaches on the Seacoast â€" and all Historical Sites, State Forests and Trails to ensure those utilizing the campgrounds and other state properties can leave before the storm's full impact hits the state on Sunday. DRED plans to reopen the Parks and other properties on Tuesday morning. The reopening of the parks will be subject to any damage and debris removal needed in the aftermath of the storm.

The National Forest Service has informed the state that it will also close the White Mountain National Forest and all of its trails and campgrounds at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The State is also urging all private campground owners to notify guests of the impending storm, and to warn them that this storm will likely bring high winds â€" including the possibility of hurricane force winds â€" and heavy rains, which could cause flash flooding, particularly in small streams and rivers.

The rain, she has started!

Dave

Hey Nasty,
just started inthe Philly area.  THey're calling for the worst of it from 4am to8am tomorrow morning.  I'm figuring power to be out for awhile with all the rain we've had (wettest August ever for this area), so I'm thinking lots of trees going over.
Good luck up there.
