Looked at Savage 93R17-BTVS, I like the thumbhole stock. Not familiar with Savage Arms. How do they stack-up? Any recommendations on a scope?

Your gonna love the acu- trigger.  I don't have a savage in 17hmr I have a CZ 452, but if I had to spend the money over again I would buy the savage. I had to do a good bit of work to get the CZ trigger down to where to savage will be with a simple turn of the adjustment screw. Don't get me wrong, the CZ will shoot tiny little groups, but so will the savage and it just looks cool. :yoyo: If your gonna do most of your shooting from a bench I would get a 6X18 or higher. Here is a link to a Burris over at savage shooters.  http://savageshooters.baker-media.com/SavageForum/index.php/topic,1140.0.html

If your gonna hit the squirrel woods I would get a 4X16 or lower.

As for Savage,i dont think you will find a better factory rifle out there. As for the scope,it all depends on how you plan on useing the rifle.

Just a little plinking-light hunting is what I'll use it for.

The 3-9 will get you there but I believe the 4-12 is a more suitable option for this rd. Maybe even the Weaver 4.5-16.
