Greetings All,
I've finished my 4th & 5th turns.
Here is the 4th.

Nothing special. It's still out of closet rod. I liked the 3rd turn well enough that I did a similar one and changed and added some stuff. It feels good in the hand and sounds good so what more can I ask for?

Here is my 5th turn that I started last night and finished this morning.
It's out of white oak. It is another call shape that I've seen before and liked so I thought I'd try to make one.

Yup...those are burn marks inside the bell from the step drill :doh2: I now know how to pull this off without generating so much heat. I've listened to the advice of you guys and really took my time on this one. The previous ones were kinda rushed because I was just so excited about making a call. Being out of oak I knew if I did it right, it had the possibility of being a call a guy could be proud of. And I am

Now for the cool part. I called up a good friend who is an elk hunter. I asked him if he had an old antler laying around that I could have to use in making calls. I was thinking he would have an old shed laying around. Well, he didn't. But he said he has a nice rack off of his elk from last year that he is will to give me......in exchange for a call :shck: Wow, what a deal!! His son is just getting into predator hunting and he wanted to give his son a "special" call.  So this call is for his son Dustin. It has a raspy jackrabbit voice and sounds pretty good. It's kinda sad letting this call go but I can make more.

As always, comments welcome.

Thanks for looking.
M

Nice job shark~
So who have ya been working with? Most of these guys starting out get hooked up with someone, or find another call maker they can turn to for coaching, questions, etc.
Have you got someone giving you pointers?

Anybody with a quarter sawn chunk of white oak laying around isn't a newbie to woodworking. Maybe new to a lathe . Good work Shark. Jimmie

Finsnfur-
I don't have anyone locally to talk to. I've PM'd a couple guys from here and from THO forum to get advice and "how to" schooling. Are you offering to be my tutor?
I'm still "equipment poor" if you know what I mean. Like when I turn I keep the mouthpiece on the left side and when the exterior it 100% done, I back out the live center, put in a Jacobs chuck and use the step drill to hollow out the barrel. But I leave everything alone when I get the step drill the right depth. Then I back off the tail stock with chuck, drill and wood all together. Then I knock out the spur chuck and put in the Jacobs in the head stock and use it a a mandrel :laf: This way I can finish the mouth piece end and get it sanded. After that I hand drill the center and then put some tape on the drill bit and put it in the Jacobs and use the drill bit as a mandrel :doh2: Now I do all the sanding in the bell end. It's kind of a mixed up backwards way of doing things, but it allows me to turn until I get the right stuff.

Jimmie-
I got the white oak from Lowe's yesterday. I had nothing laying around here and that's why the first 4 turns were made out of closet rod :laf: But you are right in a sense, I am not new to working with wood, just a lathe. But I'm more of a carpenter than a woodworker.

Thanks for the kind words Gents. I think I'm gunna like the call making hobby.
