I wanted to expand a little on the shotshell talk in the crow post w/out taking it over  :eyebrownod:

I got a case of them cheap low brass remington sport loads 8 shot......let me tell ya, a crow can take 2 full loads of them and still fly away, feathers fallin as they go.  They're running 1200 fps.  I much rather shoot a faster load imo.  ( I'm accustomed to shooting high speed steel 1500+ fps )
I break out the 20 guage and smoked one after another using 6 shot high brass.  Not sure how fast they're running, they've been layin in the bottom of the gun cab for years lol.

Over on Crow Busters you hear of the nitro 27's in the 7 1/2 shot, or the gold shells.  I hate spending money  :nono:
I have had great results using the cheaper Estate shells in the 7 1/2, If I remember correctly they're runnin at 1290 fps.  They seem to get the job done.

I shot alot of trap in my teen years and had a reloader.  Got out of shootin trap and got rid of the loader, was a single stage lee load all.  Took me awhile to load up a box, but they were a bit hotter than the normal factory trap load.

I tried those Federal 250rd packs from wally world ONCE & the doves loved them!! I soon switched over to the reloads I use now & the birds aren't so happy anymore. The 7 1/2's & 8's work equally well for me. I've never tried the 6's. I figure as much as I miss I can use the extra shot in every shell.  :laf: I personally think that the best way to be a good wingshooter is to have a gun that fits & a load you are confident in. Of course this comes from a 65% shooter.   :laf:  The other good load I've found is the Winchester 7 1/2 game loads. They pattern as nice as the handloads & really pack a punch on crows. I buy a case every once in a while for the extra hulls.

I just got my 1187 back from getting the forcing cone honed out.  I'll take that up and pattern it tomorrow with the mod and imp cly.   I'm curious too see if that helped.  Gonna bring my turk choke and throw some 3 inchers through it as well.

HaMeR

I've heard that procedure really makes a difference. Let us know how it works. I hope you enjoy those turkey loads too!!   :nono:

About how far will you be shooting for patterns? I think we set up at 35yds if I remember right.

Thats my max shooting distance for turkey so yes 35 yds is also my norm.  I might better throw some steel as well and see how they do through her.

HaMeR

If that's your go to gun it wouldn't be a bad idea to find out if things changed.  :yoyo:

Shot very well with the 8's @ 35yds with lots of hits on my crow target, nice wide even pattern.   :yoyo:

The #4 turkey loads still didnt impress me.  Around 15 hits @ 35yds.  Good enough to kill a bird but not to my satisfaction.   I might try a differnt choke, although this choke will about take the head off @ 35 yds with my 870 with over 30 hits ( think I counted 60 pellets when using 2oz 6's ),  its not doing well out of the 1187.

Got busy shootin the bull and forgot to throw some steel... :doh2:

Gonna be hard to try n beat this pattern outta the 870... I think this was at 30 yds, 2 oz 6's...

Nice pattern. That will be tough to beat.

Having the forcing cone reamed definitely helps. I have an 870 that had the barrel chopped to 18 inches, Remchoke reinstalled, and the forcing cone opened up. It did help.

That's a purdy dead turkey right there.

Looks like maybe it's a little to the left tho.  :wo:  If it comes to the right maybe 2" you'll fill the bullseye better & still have the density in the neck. Or am I seeing it wrong?

What's your crow target look like??  :eyebrow:

Dont have pic's of it, but there was at least or near 20 bb's in it with the 8 shot using factory modified.  Very even pattern over the entire large sheet of cardboard.
I was really impressed with it  :eyebrow:

I took that pic last year from my 870, it was a tad to the left but I shot that load after tryin out a number of 3 1/2's that didnt pattern for crap.  I recall jerkin the trig aniticipating the recoil.. :eyebrownod:

:yoyo:  So now you DON'T have any excuses for missing crows!!  :laf: :laf:

That's still a dead turkey even with the dreaded anticipation.  :eyebrownod:

UPDATE  :yoyo:

Very happy to announce my turkey loads are patterning fine.  Them remington 4 shot are junk outta this shotgun.
My bro and I went up and brought some Winchester 2oz 6's and I put 64 bb's in the head at 35 yds   Thats how I like it, I'm impressed and feel comfortable now.
I tried a couple chokes, My tightwad .660, Kicks .670 and Kicks .660......
All were within  + - 10 bb's at 35 yds with the kicks .660 being the best.
The tightwad .660 and the kicks .670 were almost identical.

Edit:  Have to add feels like someone punched me in the cheek  :eyebrownod:

HaMeR

:shck:  64!!??   That's great!! You probably have a 40-45yd load on your hands there. When you heal up you need to stretch it out a little more.  :eyebrow:

I use the 3" Winchester 6's in my 20ga 870 too. I don't remember the pellet count at 35yds but I know they will break a 21lb Tom's neck at 35yds.
