I think they are a good idea, especially when asking for land permission.

That's really why I got them. I went out riding tonight and found several farms and left about 25 on mailboxes and gates. I realized tonight that when I do them again, the background color, I will use a bright color like Blaze orange so they will stand out on a gate or mailbox better.
Around here a good pointer is to look for cow farms where the farmers have bought donkeys to put in the pastures with the cows to keep the coyotes away.
