Saturday was the opening Day for Dove in SC, The guys I hunt with have for the past 15 or so years have got together for a shoot on opening day, Pudd my lab has been there the last 11 years and she seems to know the day when I start loading the truck with guns, cooler,a bag of boiled peanuts and stool to sit on, she starts huffing and talking to me (Dog Talk) wanting to get into the truck, this year was no different, arriving at the field she was so excited, there was  probably 15 or 20 hunters there and she has to go around to all of them to say Hello. I also had one of the Grandson with me. The field this year had Millet and Sun Flowers and we had the best shoot in a long time, lots of Doves and they came in in small groups almost continually and I think everyone got their limit, Pudd was wide open for the first few Doves, but at 12 years old and overweight she soon ran out of gas but she was bound and determined to pick up every Dove I shot, at the end of the day she was so tired she could hardly walk and this will be her last Hunt, those of you that have a Lab will understand when I say It will really hurt me not to take her anymore as she loves it so much and that is one of the main reasons I Dove Hunt is to watch her. She has been a loyal friend and pal but I will retire her to just be the family member that she is. We had a great hunt, one that I will never forget. I posted a few pictures hope you enjoy. cc

Glad you got to get out with the grandson and Pudd you will remember that hunt for as long as you live. You and your grandson will always talk about Pudd's last trip out hunting and it will be a close memory only you and him can share.

When they come for mine they better bring theirs

Let me say thanks for the pictures too.   I have a friend who just lost his black lab "Coco" this year and she looked almost identical to your Pudd.  When she died it was a sad time.

It's a sad day for sure when you realize that you have to retire your four legged hunting buddy.  I truly believe that they know that hunting is their true purpose and love.  I stopped pheasant hunting the day I retired my Brittany at nine years of age.  It was selfish on my part (the stopping him from hunting).  But it kept him around for a few more years.  If he couldn't be in the field, I surely was not going to go with out him.  I had to put him down at 13 years when his hips went.  One of the saddest days of my life.  Every man gets one good dog in his lifetime.  I had mine.

Dave, I think you are right about them knowing their true purpose in life of Hunting and loyalty to their master, it will be hard to retire her now but like with your Brittany maybe we can keep her around a few more years, she has been such a good dog, a true member of the family for sure. cc
