Slate pot calls

The sound comes from the striker scratching across the slate. So it comes from both. Some call makers actually drill the striking end hollow about 1" deep. Most carbon strikers are hollow. The same as an arrow. The striker tip is critical. Too big & it won't play at all. Too small & depending on the wood it will just sound like fingernails on a chalkboard. The harder woods are a better choice. I would shy away from the oily woods such as Ebony. I have no experience with Ebony as a striker but I don't think it will work.

I think you've confused Ebony with African blackwood.... Ebony isn't oily at all.

Then it too should work. I thought it was oily. At any rate my favorite is hickory.

Went out & turned some more strikers today. I know have the 3 pot calls & 9 strikers headed out to a hunt for wounded Veterans!!

Sorry you missed out on this round Wendy. You'll just have to use that scratch box I made ya.

The striker makes a big difference in what a call sounds like...I use 5-6 strikers on one pot for different sounds..usually the middle of the call is a deeper more bass sound and then the edges will be more high pitched..many surfaces too.I use copper...aluminum...glass..crystal...slate..some work great in the rain..some dont work at all in the rain....my favorite all around striker is purple heartwood

I'd buy one in hopes I might get invited on a turkey hunt some day.

Oh yeah, would have to come with training, alls I know about those types of turkey calls is they would make a great coaster with twizzle stick.

The only turkey I have is the one RJ made me a couple years ago, ands a fancy box type call.

If you have an RJ call you are a lucky man. His are some of the best I have ever heard. He made me a box call from wormy chestnut & I've yet to find another turkey hunter that didn't want to buy it.

I may put a few more of those together this summer. The lathe stuff is almost on the back burner for now. The Mrs has a couple stands she wants me to build right now. And since I can't make a simple stand they will take me a little while.

And I drew up plans for a neat little desk too. This one will take a bit more time than the average desk for me.

My idea of a simple stand.
