Wind, coyotes & Red Fox

Why its a coyox, duh   

I walk in on a sleeper or a stand of timber(to call) the same way. Either from the cross-wind or slightly angled up-wind.

Flat terrain with ground cover. A hunter may get away with walking in from any angle. But where an area is mostly open & hilly. The canines will use those hills. To scan the area to their cross & down-wind. Especially the coyotes as they most always prefer a view vs no view.

Your causing me to set here and go through my hunting spots in my head and what different "angled" approaches I can use, if any.
But your approaching a target, and I'm looking for a target to approach.

Approach & stealth is most important. There are 2 approaches the way I see it. Whether walking to a call stand or sneaking up on a sleeper.

1. Bull in a china store.
2. A cat stalking an unsuspecting bird.

One bitter cold Winter day. Wind Chill was well below zero. I went out spotting & stopped on a high hill. To glass a hilly section. I spotted this caller lumbering back from the middle area of a mile section. I glassed further around where he was.

There was a coyote a couple hundred yards away, watching him leave. I then glassed the far side of the mile. I seen another coyote running away. I waited until the hunter got to the road & his truck.

I pulled up to him. Come to find out he was a friend of mine. We visited a bit. I asked him see any coyotes? No, he replied none in here. I told him what I saw. He shook his head & said he was done for the day.

Oh yeah..I dont doubt for a minute that happens more often then not.

Yes its happened to me.

I had one of my Bros along one day. I see a lone hunter tracking out around 1/2 mile. I panned out ahead of the hunter. There was a coyote over on the next hillside. Sitting there waiting for that hunter to top his own hill.

When that hunter got near his ridge. The coyote was already over on the next hillside waiting on him again. Gave us both a good laugh. Yeah they are just a stupid animal. But sometimes they outwit man.

I've seen em taking flight ahead of me like I was grouse hunting or something.

Which brings up something else I've seen. Now this doesn't happen in all accounts. But is typical or the norm. From what I've seen.

If a hunter bumps a coyote & that coyote lopes away (no shots fired). Its a good bet that will coyote will generally not go any farther than 1/2 mile (most of the time).

If it runs hard(for a long way). It will typically head for a shelter area. Where it feels "comfortable" or at ease. Such as it's old den/(core area). Which is sometimes a mile or more away from where it was bumped.

A half a mile, in three feet of snow covered woods so thick you cant get a field of view beyond 40 yards is enough to turn me around
