Try Windows Defender. It does a good job of keeping your pc free of spyware, malware, etc. Free program, part of Windows.

Get some good anti-virus software, update it, and run a scan on the whole PC.
You might have so much malware it's using your internet connection when your on.

If it finds nothing, which I highly doubt, then start looking at what's running when your connected to the internet.
I didn't even think they had dial-up anymore.

I've still got 109 days left on my Norton subscription but I don't think I want to wait that long to switch software. I'm pretty sure Norton is the biggest part of the slowness problem.

I recently loaded a new Windows XP program and bought two years worth of Shield Deluxe. I am running Windows firewall also. My question is, What the heck is JAVA? Is it worth two spits?

Java is program script type application that runs under the hood of some websites.
Java is used on the animated weather maps that you see on weather.com and is also used to power the chat board here on FnF.
Video games and programs along the same lines use Java.

It's typical job is to run these and many other types of applications so that the web server doesn't have to.
Is it worth two spits?. It is to me.

At one time I did not have JAVA, and lots of sites I went to wouldn't function. After upgrading it and Adobe Reader, all sites function efficiently. As I recall, it is a product of Sun technologies.

I have been loading all of those Java updates, and just wanted to be sure they were not just some kind of Adware. It took me several days to get this puter running after scrapping the old Windows program and installing this new one. Thanks for the help.
