Addiction to turning

Well I'm pretty sure I'm addicted to turning. It was about -5 tonight and I had a call I wanted to make. I figured I could turn it fast and get back in the house " the heater was out of fuel in the shop". It took a little longer than I though. Just about the time I finished turning the colorwood part my fingers no longer wanted to work "only sissies wear gloves around here". So I went back in the house and got a pair of gloves.  :roflmao:  You know, sanding ain't so easy using gloves "the thick insulated type" Nylon to boot, kinda slippery. LOL.  Then I had to turn the antler mouth piece still wearing gloves. While drilling the hole through the antler my glove got caught in the chuck on the drill press. I never wore gloves that tight before.     Anyway I finally got it done frozen fingers and all.

Dang John, have you thought of a safer vice to get addicted too?  At those temps your fingers could freeze, break off, and outside of seeing them fall not know that they were gone. 

Turning while wearing gloves seems to be a hot topic at times.  I know that many of the bowl turners wear them, but they are usually tight and fingerless.  But then, I have seen some turn with regular leather work gloves.  Then there are the others that say it is is just an accident waiting to, or in some cases already has, happen(ed).  I know that if I were wearing gloves I would be extra cautious since the thought of gloves getting caught and my fingers trying to get between the wood and rest is not a good one.  I am sure that you are playing safe and am only posting this for newbies to consider.

The call looks great! Have to agree with Hawk though, gloves and long sleeves are a no, no. Had a guy in the machine shop at work get caught up in a metal lathe by his long sleeves. Mangled his arm up real bad. (Several years ago) Safety first!
