The elevation is 5800 feet. That's timberline in this part of the Olympic Mountains. There are wide open meadows and scrubby short trees huddled in tight clumps shaped by winter storms.  Blacktail buck in picture below, in a tight patch of trees at the edge of timberline.

We start down at sea level so it is 15 miles of winding twisty road to climb up there by vehicle.  All but the bottom three miles near the highway are gravel/dirt but good road (except for the dust for any car following another!)  The top is in Olympic National Park.

Above is sunrise yesterday in Washington State, right off the end of Ediz Hook that forms the outer arm of Port Angeles harbor.  The Hook is a miles long gravel spit with a Coast Guard station at the end, just out of sight to the left.

Caught a lot of salmon between the camera and that red navigation buoy in the picture.
