Well I went to new place I've got permission to hunt for the first time. I didn't know how the day was going to turn out since it was raining on my way there. By the time I got there it quit. The landowner told me where he has seen coyotes come from and pointed me to where he thought would be a good spot. The wind was perfect blowing in my face walking to my spot.
The spot I was hunting was where a field with 2' tall grass slopes down to a patch of woods and a creek runs through. On the other side of the creek is a much bigger field with woods on the other side opposite of where I was. Anyway I setup in the patch of woods between the tall grass and the creek and began to call. I started out with a few fawn in distress calls followed by some pup distress. I called maybe 5 minutes and to my left coming up the hill from towards the creek was a coyote. I didn't see it until it popped up 20 yards away and I somehow got my rifle up and got it in the scope. It was coming right at me and I shot it maybe 10 yards from me. I don't know why it never saw me.
I shot it with my Savage 10 .243, but I had a shotgun laying next to me which I should have had across my lap. I could have easily got it with the shotgun, but it all happened so fast and I already had one hand on the rifle.
It was definitely one of the best hunting experiences that I've ever had even though the hunt only lasted 5-10 minutes in all. This is my second time out where I was strictly coyote hunting and my second ever killed. The first one ever was while deer hunting a few years ago, but it doesn't compare to calling one in. I am hooked.
WAY TO GO!!!! :yoyo: :yoyo: :yoyo: :highclap: :highclap: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
Enjoy the natural high. You are doing extremely well to have just started. Thank you for the story.
I definitely have been reading all I can, on here and other sources. I would think luck had a little to do with it, but I know for sure now that I'm capable of calling one. I'd give anything to have filmed it, but I was solo.

Amen to that. :whew:
I know that it is hot out there BUT I have called in a family of foxes two weeks in a row and the first time the adult male had a rat in his mouth WHILE coming to the call. He stopped at 50 yds and i just sat there and watched him. He finally got tired of looking at my ugly mug and left. Beats all I ever saw. With this heat I just quit at about 8 AM.
