End results was a trip to the ER
I took the end of my thumb off on the table saw when a piece of the wood kicked back
I am still not 100% sure what exactly happened but it happened and it could have been a lot worse then it is and the ER Dr said I need to see a specialists and said tomorrow won't be to soon

Sorry to hear that Bill.
Pat
Yip sorry to hear that too Bill.
Bill, I mirror Pat and Todd's sentiments, 100%.
Prayers your way for a quick mend.
Thanks The Dr said it will grow back but there could be other damage he just wasn't sure
Dang Bill..... hope there's no permanent damage.
Won't know right away Fos I can still move it but it sure hurts like well I am sure you understand
 Dang Bill, you're on a tough roll these days!
Yeah Shad the worst part about this is about 2 hours before this happened i was telling my Bro in law I got that feeling I am not done seeing the Dr,s anytime soon :rolleye: and 15 minutes before this i told Chris I just don't feel good today and I should just go take a nap
Gonna take time to heal Bill but I hope the soreness leaves fast. Good luck to you.
John
OUCH!!
Hope and pray you heal quick and am thankfull you still got all your digits.
So I take it you didnt get the blanks waxed up.

:alscalls: :alscalls:
:alscalls: :alscalls: :alscalls: That was funny right there!
I cringe whenever I read a post like this. I hope you heal fast.
Jerry
Yeah, that dont sound fun, but it's still there... well...most of it.
Bill, sorry to see you got injured. I've never really felt good about using a table saw to break down burls, or stock for turning. Preferred using the band saw. Much safer. Too much stress in the burls and such from drying. The case hardening stresses are forming in the pieces as they are drying. Creates a tendency for them to "pinch" on the blade.
You have to learn to listen to those little warning voices in your head too. Seems everytime we ignore them, something bad happens? Heal up fast.
Dave
This is a fine example of your never to old to learn
Dave those voices in my head have gotten me in trouble in the past
This time it could have been a different voice
I go to the specialist tomorrow and I am sure he will have some stern instructions for me
yes I will listen to him the extra strength vicodin they have me on kinda keeps me down
Sorry to hear it Bill.
Hope everything goes as good as possible
with the specialists.
Bill, I wish you a speedy recovery. It's never fun being hurt as it takes the fun out of things.
Let us know what the specialist tells ya.
Brian
Sure will B
Surgery in the morning skin graff then pressure bandage for 2 weeks absolutely no use of the left hand. Then 2 more weeks of healing after the pressure bandages come off
Off work the rest of this week and then light duty for 2 weeks for sure and depending on how well the graff takes it could be 2 - 4 more weeks of light duty
Bill,
Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear what you are needing, but at least the doctor did say something like, "I will just get rid of the rest of it for you." :rolleye:
Jerry
Yeah it was something like 18 months to 2 years to heal completely if we just let it heal on its own
Sunday in the ER they did mention cutting it off at the first knuckle of course at that time it didn't matter to me :nono: but after talking with this Dr things seem a bit different
I had just watched the History channel's program on Gettysburg before I wrote that. The saw was about the only tool they really seemed to use. :puke:
Jerry
I had the saw part covered just an updated version of what they used back then :laf:
I just need someone to fix what i messed up

Not only did you have an updated version you had a MUCH quicker saw.
Jerry
I have watched some of those shows on the history channel and I don't think I would have survived some of the practices they had back then, maybe thats why they started making shine That is the best pain reliever I have found
I am on the road to recovery
My hand will stay wrapped up in this pressure bandage for 2 weeks
(http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r300/bnccont/SS851083.jpg)
Very strict orders absolutely no fishing Do not get this wrap wet at all and lake water has way to many germs in it for me to be around
Will the Dr. let ya go after goldfish in a swimming pool Bill? Glad to see you are on the mend.
John
Glad your mending and very glad they can get you back to close to normal.
Back to close to normal is all were gonna get with Bill.
Even with all the king's horses and all the king's men. :alscalls:
Seriously though Bill...I hope your recovery is short and painless Bud.
You need to make sure you dont miss any work. The folks that refuse to work for a living but yet land in the hospital at the site of a machine or wood chisel are counting on our paychecks and tax money to keep going.
close to normal is at the best you will get out of me
damn it jim just wait i am typing one handed so i am slower then usual :alscalls:
i missed this week so i may need to count on you working folks a bit :nono: no i will survive one week off work i go back to light duty on monday and that will be for 2- 4 weeks depending on the healing process goes
hey i also thought about shaving on sunday and went and cut up this burl instead :whew:
that could have ended it all right there :laf:
Hey I got a left hand that is missing just the tip of the index finger and I broke the bone in the tip of my pinki on the same hand. My right hand is a miracle in itsself. When I was a kid I sliced the palm of my hand open down to the muscle and bone. It is amazing what they can do to put you back to right when you do something amazing to FUBAR it.
Follow the docs instructions and get one of these http://www.sawstop.com/
If the saw stop is that good why did he demonstrate with a hot dog
Yes the wold of medicine has come a long way since the 19th century
I watched a live demo of that saw and the man putting it on used his finger. Several hot dogs were used but for one demenstration he used his finger. He was cut yes but the cut didnt even require a band aid.
Sorry to hear this Bill. Hope all goes well.Pat just smashed the end of her finger on Mon.Had to trim off some bone to close it up.Not much flesh left on the end.Doc said it will be 4-6 weeks for her.Guess I will be doing a lot of house work for a while.
We've got those SawStops on every table saw in the plant, at work, they are really amazing.
Those SawStop table saws are pretty neat, but aren't cheap. After it hits a hotdog or finger there are a couple of hundred dollars worth of parts that have to be replaced - or at least that was what the demo guy said that I watched. But, as he said, it is better to spend some money on replacement parts and keep your fingers than it is to pay the emergency room bills and not have your fingers. Now if I could just afford one.
Bill, it won't be long till you will be able to use both hands again and then we can expect to read something with lots of spaces and a few letters thrown in when you use that enlarged thumb.
Jerry
They used to be somewhat expensive to repair after the safety system had been activated now its a $60 part. and 60 bucks is a dang site cheaper than a ER visit.

I am looking forward to that day now Jerry
Wow! Bill, I'm sorry to read of your misfortune! Hope everything works out OK!!
