As most of you know, Texas has been in an extreme drought since last Fall. I have a small lease (400+ acres) 30 minutes away from my front door. Fortunately, my lease is blessed with 3 good size stock tanks that are fairly deep, so attracting and keeping deer hasn't been a problem. However, due to a lack of rain, natural browse and forage, is little to none. Landowner and I have placed several feeders on the property this year in order to help out the local deer herd. Otherwise..... they would probably starve.
Anyways..... seems the corn and protein feeders have attracted more than just deer.....

Seems I need to brave the heat and go out and knock down a few.
 I don't understand, whats the big deal ? you'll just be eating pork instead of venison  I just hpoe they don't dig up your taters and eat your green beans  now that would be devastating!
Yeah whats the problem? Bar B Que Hog roast at Fos's :yoyo: everyones invited. :laf:
I think this weekend I'll try and thin the herd. Went through all my trail camera's, and unfortunately these SOB's are unpredictable. Seem to come around once every 3-4 days and stay no more than 10 minutes before clearing out.
I'll need to scout the property this weekend, but judging the direction they're coming, I know they're bedding down around the big stock tank....
May have to scrounge around and see if I can get my hands on a hog trap.
:yoyo: Looks like you'll be having BACON!
Damn Fos, it looks like you live in Hog Heaven.
Jerry
Or a hand grenade. If you get it on video I'll chip in on a new feeder so you can do it again!!
Man that's a lot of hogs. They sure don't look like the drought has hurt them none.
Jerry LMAO! :alscalls: :doh2:
Just placed a hog trap on the property. 5' wide x 8' long, and 4" high. Let's see how long it'll take to trap a few.
No hogs last night, but we did get a coon.
My wife's Uncle visiting from Mexico tagged along and helped me setup the traps yesterday.

It's a start FOs!!
Raccoon tastes almost as good as pork. More like dark meat on chicken. :puke:
Jerry
When I was a young lad, I visited kin folk that lived in the great Smokey Mtns. of NC. Had an opportunity to eat all manner of critters that swam, crawled, and flied.... to include coon. I'll pass on varmints aside from tree rats!
Ironically, my wife's Uncle was all set to skin that coon and dig in. :puke:
Folks from the deep interior of Mexico apparently aren't squeamish on where their protein comes from. :laf:
I couldnt eat it, but I know there's a lot of people that do. :puke:
Back in the day, we used to freeze the coon bodies after we skinned them and then sold them to a buyer from Lima for $1.00 each. I never tried it, but it sure looks greasy to me.
Jerry
I have eaten coon The young ones are best yes they are greasy Trim as much fat off the meat as possible then throw the fat away and put the meat in a pan on top of the stove and boil for about a half an hour then fry, bake or grill to your liking
I have never eaten Coon either but down in Georgia the Black population around our Hunt club consider them to be a delicacy along with Chittlings, looks like you may have a small fortune just waiting to be exploited. :laf: cc
We just caught the first wild hog on trail camera. Everyone wants to be the first to kill it. They been taking over middle Tennessee for some time now.
Post some pictures of the hogs caught in the traps.
Hawgs are still not cooperating. Got a couple more coons though.

I bet the coon are running them hogs off FOs. :nono: :nono:
I don't know anything about hogs but I do hear they like to move almost constantly. Do you suppose they have moved towards where the rain fell last week? I know it wasn't much rain but hey.
You still picking em up on the trail cam?

Yes, but in a different part of the property. They haven't been back to the area where I placed the trap.
Hogs move around quite a bit. Eventually they'll make their way to my trap.
Yeah the hogs around here move quite a bit too.
:doh2: Ohhhhh you meant wild hogs!
Disgusted with myself....
I checked the trap last on Sunday with my wife's Uncle. Wasn't able to get back out until this afternoon.
Caught four hogs..... probably sometime Sunday evening as they were dead and quite stiff (was 102°+ Sun. and Mon.).
Getting their bloated bodies out of the trap and dragging them off was a chore.... :puke:
Not going to reset the trap unless I KNOW with utmost certainty that I'll be able to check it the following day....
ewwwww :puke:
Consider yourself lucky though, we get fined pretty stiff up here for that.
That's too bad - I'd think they would be ok for a few days, but I guess 102+ is just too much.

I don't think there would be a fine in KY. Our regs say trapped hogs must be killed at the trap site. FOs took care that detail. :laf:
Our normal furbearer trapping regs say traps must be run every 24 hours and animals removed. I don't think that applies to hogs since they can be hunted and trapped year round. But I could be wrong about that. :wo:
If ya put a water supply in there you might be ok for a day or two. But how much water would ya need for four hogs for three days. AND if you put water in the trap theres no telling what you would catch with as short of water as you are

Leave them in there for a week
I were further South, it would be a distinct possibility.
I think you should have left them in there as bait!
