CCP,,Is the whisper sub sonic?
Title: Re: Show off your predator rifles
Post by: CCP on October 08, 2006, 12:04:07 PM
I shoot it both ways but mostly in the super sonic range 2450fps with 110g bullets. I do shoot 240g bullets around 900fps they are a blast. It is a very versatile cartridge from coyotes to deer but limited to 200 yards. Of course I like to think Iam a good enough hunter I don't need to shoot any farther.

Ok fellers, I have a 22-250 much like the Savage, and the stock is white, but I might just venture to do the whole thing scope and all with some pointers?

I read a good article one call makers site but would like to get any how to tips from you fellers.

Be safe,
Todd

Here is the Rock River. I went and got some green and black vet wrap at TSC. $4.24 FOR 2 rolls tax and all. It ain't no professional looking job, but it hides the stainless steel barrel and breaks up the outline a bit.The camera flash makes it look a lighter color than it is. It has a Burris 4.5X14 on it.

Here is my 11-87 Rem. 3 1/2"

(http://www.hunt101.com/img/316583.jpg) (http://"http://www.hunt101.com/?p=316583&c=547&z=1")
I painted it primer gray then put camo brown & flat black stripes then on top of that I misted grey stone paint waited a couple seconds then sweared it w/ a foam brush.  Trying to get a dead limb look.  Kinda light , may mist it w/ the flat black some more, but that will have to wait till after I get the barrel shorten.
It kills coyote w/ #4 buck.

(http://www.hunt101.com/img/324910.jpg) (http://"http://www.hunt101.com/?p=324910&c=529&z=1")

There is a crow stenciled on the forearm. My coyote stencil was to big for the buttstock.

Now that's a challenge (since I have so many).
Dug up a few old pictures of some of them, but missing are pics of most of the 17's and 17 wildcats I was using before switching back to traditional black powder hunting for predators about 3 1/2 years ago.

Here's a few anyway...

Bullberry 17HMR for fox.

Cooper Classic 17 Ackley Hornet
(http://wildcalls2k.com/1fnf/3r.jpg)

Browning High Wall 22 Varminter
(http://wildcalls2k.com/1fnf/4r.jpg)

Brownig Low Wall 22 Hornet
(http://wildcalls2k.com/1fnf/5r.jpg)

Contender Stealth w/custom 6X47 barrel, Choate folding stock.

Custom Sako/Douglas L461 Vixen 222 Rem
(http://wildcalls2k.com/1fnf/7r.jpg)

Semi custom Remington 700 VS 223 Rem
(http://wildcalls2k.com/1fnf/8r.jpg)

Have 15 ML's, but two 32's and two 36's are dedicated to predators and varmints.  This one is a semi custom TC Hawken 36 with 4X brass scope.    Also has 45 & 50 barrels, both flint/cap locks, several sight sets and a palm rest.

I know you said "rifles", but since I have been a serious handgun hunter for over 40 years, probably as much of my predator calling was done with specialty pistols as with rifles before I went back to black powder.     Have lots of TC's and lot's of custom barrels (don't ask), still a few bolters and several SAA's that were all used for predators and varmints.   Will just post a few...

Bullberry Contender - 17 Ackley Hornet

Bullberry/Bower Contender - 6.5 Super Bower

Post by: Ladobe on May 04, 2007, 01:10:49 AM
Thanks gents.   Don't have an exact count, but have around 60 firearms and dozens of custom wildcat barrels for the (do I dare say this...) 20 Contender frames.    About a dozen of them remain unfired and NIB because I bought so many new higher end toys while I was bored at home convalescing from the accident for months, and then never got around to shooting them.    :rolleye:

Ed - The LW Hornet was a favorite until I got my three 17 Ackley Hornets 6-7 years ago.   The 17AH all but retired all of my 22 Hornet rifles and pistols because it does so much more so much better.    The 17AH is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.   But my favorite 22 Hornet of all is a 1949 BRNO ZKW with fancy factory wood I finally found about 3 years ago after looking for a special one for about 45 years.   Grandpa taught me how to shoot with his Plain Jane 1949 ZKW Hornet in the early 50's, but had sold it before he died when I was 13.  Cost me way more the what the LW's go for even now, but I'm glad i finally found one.   Gave up looking for a spare clip for it though after 2 years of searching here, Canada, Europe and Oz (and they go for $200 or more anyway).

Chet -  Unfortunately, the best source for custom XP mid grip stocks dried up about 3 years ago due to retirement (was in his 80's).   As of about 2 years ago you could still buy inletted/roughed out blanks from him though, but he was shipping the best wood on a first come basis so have no idea what if any he has left.   Can dig out his contact info if you need it.    I have one out of figured walnut that I am making myself from scratch for my XP 7mmBR, and a couple of my XP's wear the old Fajen Victory stocks (which are now pretty rare and costly too).

I do too Jim. It just falls into place. That was a roughed out stock from Gunstocks Inc. It took me a little bit to cut the finger grooves, fit the recoil pad and fit and finish it, but it was well worth the trouble. I have 2 more to work on and 1 more on the way. I have a autumn camo diamondwood for the 204, a black and silver diamondwood for the 25ACP x 50 ML and a fiddleback maple/rosewood cap and tip for the 300 Mag.  :yoyo: Can ya tell I'm an Encore fan?  :eyebrow:

Getting closer buddy. I went and checked out a case for flying out with the new Tikka. Looked at the Flight Proof case at Cabelas over the weekend. I'll pick one up next trip down.Checked out air fare too. Not too bad if I book early. All I need now is a motel and a buddy to show me around.

Here are a couple of my so called predator rifles. I call them predator rifles, but the predators here in PA don't recognize them as such. That is the only reason I can come up with for them shunning me. :madd:

Top is an NEF in 223 stocked in Choate Survival stocks. Next is a Mod 12 Savage 22/250 in a Choate Ultimate Varmint stock. Last but not least is the new Tikka in 22/250.  We are going to bloody that one up good Rock. :eyebrow: At least that is the plan.

R.J. , there are a few things to make bleed around here. I bet we can manage to get some blood on it if you make it down this way. The Midland / Odessa, TX airport would be the closest and easiest place if you can get travel set up for it. If not then Elpaso, Tx but, It's twice as far to drive to C-Bad. If you go toward the west side of the state Elpaso would be good access to the LasCruses and Deming area. I don't know anything about that side of state from personal travle but, it does have Coyotes.

Shoot a Pm when you come up with a plan and let me know what's up.

Brian im  making me a thumbhole stock for my muzzleloader. i already have a rough cut out of it but i cant figure out how to get the would to fit with the tapered barrel. whats all the tools you used for that?
Title: Re: Show off your predator rifles
Post by: CypressSlough on June 02, 2007, 10:08:37 PM
I used a Gunline Barrel Bedding Tool to rough it down. Then I used sandpaper wrapped around a dowel rod to fine tune the shape and depth. The bedding tool removes wood very quickly. Use caution with it. If ya get too agressive with it, you'll cut way too much wood off before you know it. Make sure you check the depth of the barrel channel as you work it down.

What ML do you have?

Cody, I left off another tool I used. A Jerry Fisher Inletting Scraper. It has a different size scraper on each end. It will help fine tune the taper and smooth everything up as well.

I am surprised most people KNOW about Parker-Hale, many people I talk to about rifles think a Parker-Hale is sold at Wal-Mart  :laf:,,I had a problem when I bought it because before I bought My reloading stuff 20 years ago I went to a buddies house to reload some old brass from one of the friends guns,,well I forgot to take the rifle because I always loaded 3 shells and checked the feed of the reloaded shells,,well I forgot the gun and told the friend that i have checked the first 3 rounds on a ton of guns and they always worked nice,,so we proceeded to load 60 rounds and when I got home i put them up,the next day i decided to check them,,well the first 3 the bolt would NOT close :doh2:
the next few the bolt closed BUT i had to force it,and I had a gunsmith tell me before that if you can get the bolt closed and locked down you could shoot the gun,,well about 20 were shot out of my gun and the other 40 worked Flawlessly in my friends Remington 788,,went in it like butter and you could close the bolt with 1 finger :mad3:
I COULD NOT understand the difference in chambers
SO I went to the "old" Gunsmith and asked him what the hell was going on? so he explained it to me
HE said that the American gun makers will use a set of brushes on around 200 guns,,BUT the Parker-Hale Brits used a set of brushes on only about 10 - 20 rifles and then changes brushes,,SO that means the Parker-Hale chamber is under a TIGHTER TOLERANCE than the American chambers and all I need to do was neck size the shells that were shot out of my Rifle,,which is what I do NOW  :doh2:
I was going to sell the gun to 1 guy and another wanted to trade me a gun for it and I changed my mind at the last minute   :whew:
BUT I have been thinking of getting rid of it here lately but I am looking at buying a new Rifle in 204 Ruger and 25-06
BUT the problem I am having is I have HEARD Remington has gone DOWN HILL and they have a lot of problems in Quality ??? I DONT KNOW for myself BUT I am sure someone on here can help me out  :laf:
I HOPE ANYWAY ?

alright and did ya put any special type of finish on or just tung oil?
Title: Re: Show off your predator rifles
Post by: CypressSlough on June 04, 2007, 04:31:29 PM
That is 10 applications of Tru Oil. The first 4 were used to wet sand the raised grain and fill the pores. The next 6 were to build the finish to the look I wanted, then rubbed out to remove any surface imperfections. Finally a buffed wax finish. I waited 24-48 hours between each wet sanding sequence and a minimum of 4 days between each finish coat. You could probably do it faster than I did, but I wanted to make sure each layer of finish was hardened enough before it was messed with. Tru Oil dries to the touch fairly quickly, but takes a while to cure. You need to make sure you prep the stock correctly before you ever start applying any finish. I raised the grain and sanded it down 6 times before I started wet sanding with finish. It helps to practice on a couple of scrap pieces before you commit the stock to finish. Rub the scrap wood with a damp cloth and allow it to dry. You will see the wood as being fuzzy. Sand it down to 400 and wet again. You will be amazed at how smooth the wood will become after doing this a couple of times.

You can learn more about it here.  It is a good finish and living where you do, it should cure (dry) very nice.

Yeah I do, but after patterning it with coyotehunter1 it became very apparant that my baby liked the BB+ loads better and carried a tighter pattern. We shot out to fifty yards and it was still blowing through the plywood and putting a good amount of pellets in the coyote target. The #4 buckshot was all over the place at that distance and sometimes there were zero pellets in kill zone areas.

Besides that, there is no time of the year when I can legally use #4 buckshot.........

I have some slugs and 00 buck for the 10 gauge, but it's more for the two footed kind of varmint.

ohiobob,
That Parker/Hale is a beauty to behold. Does it shoot well?  If so, I advise you to keep it.  You are correct about Remington going down hill. Their run of the mill rifles have cheap and flimsy synthetic stocks. I have seen a few of their ADL models that wouldn't shoot for beans because of the cheapo stock. I do have a new Remington 700 CDL that has very nice fit and finish, and it shoots well. If you go Remington route, go with a more expensive model . I know that Remington can still build good rifles, but they are putting out some pretty sad junk at lower price in their attempt to sell guns.

My Parker-Hale is a GREAT shooter,,it IS the most accurate Rifle I have EVER owned !!! The Rifle surprised me with Factory Loads and then when I started hand loading for it the accuracy was a TON better,,and then when I introduced the Ballistic tip bullets to the Rifle it got a LOT BETTER,,I shoot 50 Grn V-Max out of it now and it is Poison,I WISH I would have had the P-H when i shot at my FIRST Coyote 6 weeks ago  :doh2: but im still getting use to the AR-15
as far as the Remingtons go,,I ALWAYS ownded the BDL's,,and 1 in an ADL in 22-250
I HAVE been looking at the Savage BUT i dont know,,whichever Rifle I buy it will be in 25-06 and maybe I will get a 204 in the other Rifle,,the Wife ASKED why i need TWO MORE RIFLES  and I told her that was is itty bitty for itty bitty animals and the other is Bigger for Bigger animals,,well she just said : OK  :shock2:

Thanks for the quick reply, the article said its Ballistics EQUAL the 25-06 AND I have always wanted a 25-06 so MAYBE I could switch to the 25 WSSM ??? AND it seems like the round SHOULD stay around for a long time ??? that was a VERY GOOD ARTICLE,,Short and sweet and right to the point

The 25-06 has been around a long time for sure.  I wonder about how long the WSSM cartridges will last.  Seems like there is always a new "latest and greatest" round of some type coming out.  I am not trying to rain on the 25 WSSM, I've never shot one.  Just saying that for me to invest in a new caliber, it has be MUCH better than the tried and true oldies. ( IMHO, YMMV, and my 2 cents worth which is overpriced.  )

Nope Jimbo it ain't wood. It's that danm cheap slap-around plastic stuff they call a composite. Let me tell ya, it sure-nuff is light.  It seems to be my lightest centerfire rifle. Not flimzy either. :sneer:

I really can't say that it's up to snuff w/ the 25-06, but I didn't want it to be.  For one thing I'm a short-action fan & the short/fat type cartridges are making a real show for themselves in the accuracy department. :yoyo:
Before this site started there was this other site I was often on  :innocentwhistle: & there was this guy (this will make your heart flutter ohiobob) who had a D-tech in 25WSSM & he was potting crows @ 300yds w/ it. :shck: That's what got me to looking. Personally I'd like to see this in a 6.5WSSM.  :eyebrow:  However, this 25 is no slouch. It just bugs me there aren't any A-Max bullets for it. :rolleye:

For you A-bolt owners Timney has springs that you switch out to lighten the trigger pull. About $20 at Midway & money well spent.  Easy to switch too!

I didn't know it took a 25 caliber to kill crows at 300 yards. Had I, I'd not have shot hundreds with my 22 Hornet at up to 350 yards. Does that Browning have a chrome lined barrel? I heard they were going to offer the WSSM calibers in chrome lined. I also heard they (Browning ) was going to quit making them.

Hey "V", good looking whistler whacker you got there. :yoyo:  I had a 25 WSSM for a very short time. I was so in love with the short fat cartridge, I used it for a game piece when Ma and the kids and I played Monopoly. But, I had to let it go. The Winchester Super Shadow I bought it in, had a headspace problem.  Upon returning it to the local gun and shooting emporium, I replaced it with my first Mod 12 Savage. I wish it would have worked out for the Mod 70 25, but it wasn't to be. I may do a build on one in the future. I have a gunsmith buddy ( who worked on my 6PPC) that has done some playing around with a 6.5 Super Short wildcat. Lots of promise. You may get your wish, that is about the only hole in the short mag line up.Someone needs to do up a light varmint rig in the 6.5 and promote it a little. The 6.5 is really getting alot of attention these days in some of the shooting sports. The afore mentioned smithy friend, has a couple 25 BRs on the table at present. This is another sweetie I am watching for a potential custom build.

The hunting is pretty slow here. The hay is late in getting cut, and everyone is drilling the country side full of corn. I guess they are figuring on getting in on the ground floor of the ethanol craze. Good for the deer hunting, not so good for whistle pigs. Keep whackin' and stackin' em buddy,R.J.

James
The 25 WSSM that DTech sells in an AR-15 Upper is why I was trying find if it was comparable to the 25-06 BUT just a Short action round ???
The article I read last night and a couple of other articles are comparing the 25 WSSM and the 25-06 and all say they are PRETTY CLOSE in comparison,,so I am looking at it like If I buy the AR-15 upper in 25 WSSM it would be very CLOSE to having a 7 shot semi-auto in 25-06  :yoyo: and that would be GREATTTTTTTTTTTT in my book  :yoyo:
But I am going to research it some more and see what I come up with ? But DAMNNNNNNNNN that would be a nice gun with some KICK ASS Ballistics  :congrats:
James what Bullets are you using as your "varmint" Bullet ??? and what is the "LIGHTEST" bullet you will shoot out of your Rifle ? and what is the LIGHTEST bullet made for the .25 Caliber Rifle ???
Thank you VERY MUCH

I haven't killed any predators with any of these, but I believe if I can get one in front of me, any of them will do the job.

On top is my Encore with the T/C .223 barrel and Leupold vari-x II 3 X 9 scope.  This is the one I've been hunting with lately.  On the bottom is the thumbhole stock and a D A van Horn barrel in .204 Ruger for the Encore. It is a heavy bull barrel w/o scope right now because its for sale.

This is a Ruger 77/22 in .22 Hornet with a Simmons ATV 4.5 X 14 scope.  Its a tack driver, and I was carrying it, but changed to the .223 thinking it might be a bit light for coyotes.

This is a Sako .22-250.  It has a heavy barrel and beavertail forend with a Leupold fixed 12 power. I bought this in Germany in 1984 hoping to someday get back to Colorado and shoot prairie dogs. That never happened, but its a great gun.

This is a Bushmaster XM-15 in .223 with an EOtech sight. Its got a SureFire M3 light and alot of cool toys hanging on it. Its really set up more for work than play, but after seeing how many guys are using AR's for coyotes, I've been thinking about taking it out some.

I've got a Ruger mini-14 also, but didn't take a pictue of it. I doubt I'll use it anyway.

Yes that is our LBL coyote.  The 60 grain V-Max is a great coyote bullet.  My rifle has a 1 in 7 twist so I need to shoot the heavier bullet.  It is really nice having the instant back up shot if you need it.  This dog only required one round as it was only 25 yards away.  My second dog was 90 yards away and my first shot was not a good killing shot.  I think I shot high.  My rifle is dead on at two hundred yards so that makes it 1 3/4 inches high at 100 yards.  I was shooting at a slight downhill angle.  I held right on in the excitement of the moment and think I overshot.  The recoil is so slight that I did not even loose the image in my scope so the second and third shots were very quick and more accurate.  I probably didn't need the third round but the dog was running toward a thicket and I wanted to anchor it before it got out of sight.  Here is that female:

I prefer one shot kills, but it sure is nice to have an instant second shot if needed especially here in the thick stuff we have in WV.

Since we have more feral hogs than predators in my AO, I put together a specialized hawg killer. I just need to sight it in and go forth and bloody it!

LWRC M6A2 6.8 SPC with an L3-M845 night vision scope (with an integrated red dot reticle) and a variable beam IR illuminator

No problemo!

This air rifle has a 21.6inch barrel, overall-length 42.1inches, weighs about 7.1lbs without scope/rings, and has been tuned for power (up to 285fpe, from about 200fpe out of the box).  No need for powder, shell casings, or PRIMERS!  150 cast boolits go for roughly $15, so shooting is cheap.  Cast your own soft lead boolits (no jacketed boolits), and the shooting gets DIRT cheap!

Here are some ballistics shooting .45Colt slugs, and roundball (the coyote pictured above was shot with lil' ol' roundball).  This rifle is good for four shots within a 20fps maximum variance (sometimes less) on a single fill of air, followed by a few "finisher" shots.

Hornady .457RoundBall @886.3fps=249fpe
210grainer780.9fps@284fpe
Lee ROA's 220grain@764.8fps=285fpe
BigLube PRS 255grain@699.7fps=277fpe
245grain REAL@715.7fps=278fpe

Shot this small hog with a 228grain SWC.  Dropped him like a stone.

A 600page report on the rifles ability using a 260grain SWC from a distance of 25meters.

Average accuracy @50yards shooting off of steady stix (used a tacklebox for a rest for the first group).  Both the #454424 hollowpoint, and the WFN that was used in the second group weigh about 235grains.  The cardboard behind the first target was pretty shot-up.

Forgot to mention, that there are also bigbore air rifles in .45 that put out ballistics that match the original .45Colt loading (maybe a bit more), and are capable of effectively using slugs weighing 500+grains.

This one is "state of the art".

Are those high powered air guns regulated under federal or state laws?    How much noise do they make?    :wo:

Like black powder guns, you can order them thru the mail, and they don't require federal registration.  The ammo isn't "loaded ammuntion", making it nice to be able to order ready-to-shoot ammo thru the mail without any sort of hassle.

As to state laws, there are a select few super-liberal states (New York, Illinois, etc) that have their own local regulations so that is something everyone should look into for themselves.

They are not silent by any stretch.  They sound a bit like a shotgun, without the sonic "crack" of the sound barrier breaking.

These bigbore airguns are going to grow in popularity real fast, so you all may be seeing someone shooting them in your area sometime soon.
