I was wondering if any of you fellas make turkey trumpet style calls?
Funny you should mention those. I am sitting here cutting river cane and trying to learn how to make th yelpers from that. Same as a wing bone just diferent materials. Stiil experimenting with length of each piece and size to get the sound I want. Jimmie
I used to make them ........I know there are a few on here that dose a wonderful job of making them. I just do not have the time for them anymore. I still have the first one I made many years ago. :eyebrownod:
I think Kee Kee and coulter makes em I know there is more.... :wo:
I'm almost positive I've seen them on Brents site but it appears to be down at the moment.
I have made some wingbone yelpers and still have a pile of wingbones (including some from Al) but I have not made one in a while. Just been to busy with other calls...I might try and get some done before the season opens though. Especially since my son busted mine when he was younger :rolleye:
Steve
I dont recall if Brent had any, but if he did he doesn't have any at the moment. I backed up all his products etc.
I'm in the middle of rebuilding his whole site, due to some security issues with the software we used way back when, and it will be down for a while.
I'd say get a hold of Al at thogamecalls.com
I know Brent mad e teh wingbone calls but not te trumpets. I would like to learn to turn the trumpets myself but not sure of the mouth piece materials. Jimmie
my bad, I thought the wing bone calls were the trumpets :doh2: Whats a trumpet ?
I thought you meant wing bones myself...isn't a trumpet the same thing just different materials?

Way cool........Who made it?
WOW... seriously I've never seen one !!! :yoyo: looks perty, how do they sound ?
That one was made by CypressSlough.
Al at THO pumped out a lot of info on these calls a while back. I tried to find it this morning but couldn't and I gotta get scootin to work here.
The post wasn't on how to make them, but more so on how well the secret or tricks of the trade, on making them remains protected by the age old trumpet builders.
A highly sought after call and secret.

You can't tell the diference in a well made trumpet and a wingbone call. And if you turn wood or make calls everybody and thier brother thinks you should be able to make one. Bore size and length are keys to the sounds they make. I am learning that from fooling with the cane calls. That mouth piece must be right or the tone will not be right. The bell is there to add volume I think. I would think you could use cherry for th mouth piece since it is a very dense grained wood, in place of delrin or deer antler. Jimmie
As I was reading this thread I'm thinking "I know where to get that info" I guess HaMeR did too!!
I bought a trumpet from RJ, Dogwood Creek a few years back. It looks and sounds good I really like it but I haven't seen him around for quite awhile! I also have wingbone call from Brent that I really like even though I'm not real good at using it.
Jimmie,
I wonder if they would be easier to use if you made the mouthpiece like the mouthpiece of a real trumpet?
Concave and flared a bit :eyebrow:
No, cause your not blowing air into them like a real trumpet, your blowing it over it.
Well , actually your sucking air into it. It's like lip squeaks but the mouth piece amplifies the sound. I am finding it interestin and agravating trying to get th right sound from this cane. It's been a long time since I used a wingbone . I finally decided to put these two wing bones together so I would have something to compare too. Jimmie
I tried it with a mouth piece off my daughters trumpet and I believe it will work. Of course on a much smaller scale.
What kind of sound does that thing make Jim?

I have made wingbone calls and I know what needs to be done ...and when I get more time........I will show ya what I mean :eyebrow:
Jimmie, I like the sounds that come from a cane trumpet. They sound really good. Here's a Third Ridge Yelper made out of cane that I got from Irving Whitt. It's a sweet talker.

And here are a couple more examples of trumpet yelpers.
This is another from Irving Whitt, made out of African Blackwood with an ivory mouthpiece.

This one is from Dad's Custom Calls made by Jerry White. It's a desert ironwood with an ivory mouthpiece.

Them are some beauties Brian. :congrats:
Saweeeet Brian!! :yoyo:
So you know Irving Whitt, Ben?
He's a very eccentric individual, and has some unbelievable talent when it comes to this stuff. I mean unbelievable!.
I've spent many hours on the phone with Irving.
Here's some more of his work;

Wow Jimbo had to do a double take on those I at first thought you posted some pics of hookah pipes man are those some highly detailed yelpers SWEET :yoyo: :yoyo:
What Al said!!!!
Jim
Those have to be hte finest examples of the call makers art I have even seen bar none. Now its a little more understandable when I hear rumors of trumpets going for several hundreds of dollars.
And I apreciate the pics of the cane calls. I now have a better idea of sizes for the diferent parts. Jimmie
Very beautiful calls :yoyo: not sure if I'd take them on a hunt, I'd be afraid of breakin them.
Well that did it :doh2: The wife heard me listening to the call and came over to see what I was doing. Showed her these most excellent call's on this thread and now I'm not the only one's ancestry that has come into qauestion in this house. She thought the call's were gorgeous but the part where I want some did illicit some remark's that shouldn't be put down in print.
If I should go missing in action you now know for what reason.
Barry
When it's time for me to buy one I'm just gonna bite the bullet & do it. I'm gonna beg & grovvle!! :roflmao:
Put the toilet seat back and go for it Barry! :laf:
Irving's web site is http://ihwcustomcalls.com
Sweet as hell!!
