Title: Who wants to get together?
Post by: Mallardsr on January 31, 2009, 06:28:14 PM
Just wanted to check if there was any one interested in finding a place to hunt with a group. (Not to move the LBL hunt but to save vacation already submitted). I am looking at Big South Fork, Catoosa, and Cherokee national forest south. Opinions please.

For Tennessee, you out of state guys need a type 72 7-day small game 50$ and a type 93 wma permit 17$. The weapons will have to be rimfire or shotgun. LBL is the only centerfire for yotes unless private property. This would apply to all three places listed above.

Catoosa is a no go! Walk in only . Gates locked

This is a better idea. 48000 acres and they allow coyote hunting!

They even have a Wrangler Campground there!!

Everyone is welcome to come to WV.  Rooms at the Knights Inn are $48.00 per night.  There are several thousand acres of Public Hunting land available and I have have access to quite a bit of private land.  Pretty rough hunting here though??

If we all get our heads together we can come up with something that will work for everyone.  I sure would like to get together with you  guys!!  Someone needs to help me with these coyote tracks.  I think Al and I found some good ones today!!  I will post the pictures later.

Indiana has huge state huntin areas. There are several in the southern Half of Indiana that are very  populated with coyotes. Theres a huge state hunting area that is coyote hunter friendly Near Seymour and Just west of the Ky line. I am in Southern Il right now but I planned to come to LBl Friday and If any Ky boys needed a ride or company, I could swing through the Elizabethtown area off I64 and pick them up and drop them off. There are cheap hotel;s near Seymour too. Or where ever you guys will come up with something I'm sure. Indiana is very rifle friendly(anything goes) and night hunting/for fox coyote/spotlighting 24hrs. I was really looking forward to hanging and talking coyotes with you guys again. A couple hotel rooms and I'm sure we could make do.  Brainstorm guys! I'm sure a hotel/motel would love to get sold out this weekend. If anyone would like to do some brainstorming. 618-772-9128 anytime.  Jerryboy

One last suggestion, Redbird wma in eastern Ky. north of Knoxville Tn.  Theres plenty of room to hunt, you CAN use centerfire, there is no where close to stay that I can find. I talked with weedwalker, he said the best access would be from the south in Pineville Ky. See what you can find out about this. I am going to bed. More tommorrow! Hold on to the dream! RP

I ain't ready to give up yet either! Not really willing to go shotgun/rimfire though. I don't mind buying an out of state license, Kentucky would work for me, if Natchez trace will allow center fire that would be great for me. Heck I just don't want to let this pass.

I want to go.  I know the guys in our WV, PA group have been looking forward to getting together with our F&F friends all year.  I have been like a kid before Christmas the past few weeks.  Now I learn that Santa Claus has cancelled Christmas this year.  Bummer!!  Big time BUMMER!!  KY would be good for the guys who have already purchased their out of state license!  Come on guys let's get something put together and salvage this thing!!  If there is anything I can do to help just let me know!!

Here's a few pics of what it looks like over at Redbird. It goes for miles and miles. If you come in from the south side it's mostly reclaimed strip mines. If you come in from the north, it's mostly steep hardwoods with not as much user access. ATVs can be used on part of it, and liscensed vehicals can drive on any of the gravel roads thruout the area. If you get your ATV in the wrong area you WILL get a ticket. The game wardens watch it pretty good because of all the elk in there. If you run into an active mining area turn around and don't go thru it.

I reserved one of the 5 cottages.  The lady I spoke with said it has a kitchenette, two bedrooms with two beds in each and seperate shower and bathroom in each bedroom.  Sounds real nice.  She didn't say anything about a pull out couch??  She also said it is about an hour from the rooms to the Redbird WMA??

I'm getting excited again!!  Hope everyone can make it!!

Title: Re: Who wants to get together?
Post by: weedwalker on February 01, 2009, 06:03:22 PM
It's only about 20 miles to where you can start hunting. The whole area used to be known as Redbird. But it's now divided up into several WMAs. The actual part of it called Redbird now is the farthest north part of it. There is also Graham WMA, Ataya WMA, a couple other WMAs that I can't think of the names at this moment, and Daniel Boone National forest. There are a few small parcels of private property within the WMA boundaries but they are well marked.
All that is needed to hunt is a small game liscense. No other permits are required.

Yes, you can hunt in the Daniel Boone forest, and yes, hogs are in all year. But I've never seen a hog over there.
And Jim, Yes, handguns are OK too.

It's a big place with trails going everywhere. If you have a GPS you might want to use it. Cell phones work on top of the hills but not in the valleys.

Not as many as there used to be. I killed a few of them. The cat and yote in my avatar are from there.

There's a pretty good population of coyotes in there. Not as many as in the western part of the state though.

Title: Re: Who wants to get together?
Post by: weedwalker on February 01, 2009, 06:54:56 PM
If you look at a Ky map, Route 66 goes north from Pineville. Not far out of town Route 221 forks off to the right. Going north from there on either road is the hunting area as long as you stay between the two roads. There is private property along the road frontage of those two roads and the WMA property is behind them. There are several gravel or one lane blacktop roads that turn off into the WMAs. As long as you go uphill to the top of the hill from the main roads you will be in the WMA.
