I did a javelina hunt in texas many many years ago and seem to remember the guy running the ranch saying the feral hogs (males) are ok to eat if they'd been caught and castrated as piglets.  If not, they're mean and stink (I think a castrated hog would have the attitude!).  I think sows were ok, though.  But then again, maybe I was being bullshitted.
