My brother was hunting the bank of the Conn. River bordering a huge corn field surrounded by big oaks and heavy brush, set up in a blind with 2 hen and 1 jake decoys set out at 20 yards...he said as soon as it got light out he heard birds roosted who flew down into the field about 50 yards from the blind...the big boss tom who we had previously watched with spotting scopes breeding hens and whuppin toms...spotted the decoys and made a beeline for the jake decoy...jumped on it...stomped and spurred it...and then when he started strutting again my brother shot him at 20 yards....23 pound bruiser of a bird with huge hooks...so when he cleaned the bird..he found some balls of cartilage in it and cut some open and they had #4 and #6 shot in them...looked like hevishot..and the flesh had coated them...looked like he had been shot before ........maybe more then once....he shot the bird with #2 shot......a day later in the same spot his boy who is in this pic with him...dropped a 20 pounder with his trusty NEF 20 gauge:

Just goes to prove those critters are tough, caryying all that shot around. Too many hunters not knowing the range and pattern of their load. Doesn't sound like you guys had that problem, though! :yoyo: :highclap:
Take your kids hunting and you won't have to hunt your kids!

That big bird was hyper aggressive..we were watching him quite a few times from a long ways off with spotting scopes and he was totally dominating that field....breeding like crazy and pounding on any other toms or jakes that he saw...def the Boss Bird in that corn field.
