Blue Birds

Last winter my daughter wanted to build a bird house. So we got on the internet did a bit of research, printed out some plans and went to work. Two weeks ago my girlfriend Lynda hung it up in her front yard. The first day a couple of grackles were checking it out. The second day a pair of Blue Birds were checking it out. Well the Blue Birds decided to use it and went to work building a nest.

I took a few pics this morning.

We thought it was pretty cool.

Never seen a bird like that before but it is kinda cool when ya see them moving into your new rental property.

I have Bluebird boxes around the property that I've made.  We usually have a pair nesting in the box below the house.  This year they produced a brood then headed on out.  Got a Carolina wren using the box now.  One thing you can do to prevent unwanted pest birds from using the box is to remove the perch from the front of your box.  The bluebirds don't mind.  The starlings don't like it.  You can also attach a small rectangular box of wire mesh around the front portion of the box outside the entrance hole. [ 3" x 4"x 6"].  For some reason the pest birds don't like the mesh, but the bluebirds do. When I get extra T-111 siding pieces, I'll construct 10-12 "Peterson Bluebird boxes".  Then I donate them to the local Waterfowl Propagation Project.  I can't tell you how many boxes I've donated? LOL!  But the Bluebird population at the Middlecreek Projects are very happy!  The thing about Eastern Bluebirds, is that they are a "Barometer" of how the environment is fairing.  They were practically wiped out by Pesticides and DDT in the sixties.  You won't find a prettier bird in my estimation.  I've even carved a few over the years.  LOL! 
Anyway, well done!  Your daughter and you made a valuable contribution to nature.
