Smallmouth spawn before the largemouth. Smallmouth start their spawn when water temps reach around 60* and the largemouth start at about 65*. In fast warming lakes they can be spawning at the same time though. But they prefer different types of bottoms to spawn on. Smallmouths prefer gravely or sandy bottoms while largemouth prefer mud or clay bottoms. And smallmouths generaly spawn in a little deeper water than largemouth.

Drove over our two biggest rivers yesterday and I guess we won't be making a cast for a day or three .
