Are the regulations listed below standard, or are they on the conservative side?

Tennessee Law

(1)Steel cable snares having a minimum cable diameter of 5/64 inch and maximum cable diameter of 3/32 inch. Spring activated snares, except Collarum snares, are prohibited.
(2)Cushion-hold traps - Woodstream Soft-Catch, Butera Cushion Catch traps, Cushion Catch #33, J. C. Conner Coyote "Jake" Trap, Duke Rubber Jaw trap and any legal sized offset jawed traps equipped with "Humane Hold" universal pads by K. G. Enterprises meet the definition of a cushion-hold trap. These traps are the only steel traps legal for trapping in the open and on top of the ground,
(3)Steel leg-hold traps Steel leg-hold traps (steel-jawed traps) with a jaw spread of 7 and 1/2 inches or less. These must be placed at least 12 inches inside the entrance to a burrow or hole except in the case of a water set. Water sets are defined as traps set in water adjacent to and part of streams, ponds, lakes, wetlands or other water courses, and include floating sets.
(4)Instant-kill traps (with jaw measurements no greater than 10x10 inches and smaller).  An instant-kill trap is considered a steel-jawed trap and its use is restricted to that allowed for a steel-jawed trap.  Conibear traps are instant-kill traps.

Yes and no.....

Many states do not allow snares [NC - snares only for beaver]
Many states allow std steel jaw traps up to a 1.5 [varies by state] and then require off set jaws for traps bigger. Soft jaw are getting more attention and I would expect more states will adopt them in their regulations.
7.5" spread is a fairly common max size for foot hold traps.
Fairly std is being less restrictive on water sets vs land sets.
ooops - conibear regs are worded differently, but kinda similar to what I have seen else where, except many states give broader range of use for 220 and smaller and don't allow 330 size except in water. ie. I can set 220's in culverts, tree boxes, pole/log sets....but doesn't look like that would be legal for even a 110 in TN.

Your regulations are looser than Oklahoma.

Box traps; smooth-jawed, single-spring, leg-hold steel trap with a jaw spread no greater than eight (8) inches; smooth-jawed, double-spring offset jawed (two springs or more have to be offset), leg-hold steel traps with a jaw spread no greater than eight (8) inches. Snares & conibears are not permitted under general trapping regulations.

Persons trapping under the general annual resident trapping license may use no more than 20 traps. There is no limit for persons holding the professional license.

When double-spring offset jawed steel traps are used, signs must be posted conspicuously to the right and left of all entrances from public roads and highways and from adjacent lands at corners of perimeter fences. Signs must have minimum dimensions of five (5) inches by eight (8) inches and the wording "Traps" must be included and be conspicuous on the signs and printed in letters at least two (2) inches tall. Persons trapping on their own property are not subject to this requirement.

Enjoy your freedom ... and fight the fight to keep it.
