Better late than never...got some turkey calls done

Been working on these for over a month now. Finally got them done.

Leopard wood and Butternut. Both are slate over glass, Matching strikers, the Leopard wood one has a hickory dowel, the Butternut one is all butternut. We were setting poles on a feller's property and I saw that he had a Woodmiser mill set up. He had a Cucumber log on it. I tried to bum some cucumber wood off of him to no avail, but he handed me a couple of butternut boards. Both were riddled with ants. This call is out of one of the few places I could find that didn't have too many holes in it.



Elm and Bocote. Both are slate over glass with matching strikers w/hickory dowels. The elm is from a tree that a fellow co-worker and I cut off of the power line here locally.



A couple of cocobolos. The first one is copper over glass and the other is slate over glass. Matching strikers with hickory dowels.

They are all very exceptional but the one that really jumps out is that Bocote coloration

The bocote one almost didn't come to fruition. I made so many mistakes and mistakes trying to fix mistakes. I finally just put it on the bench and forgot about it. Meanwhile, it got knocked off and broke. I eventually glued it back together and put it back on the lathe to touch it up. I figured it made it this far, I might as well finish it. So I did and gave it to a guy I work with figuring he might have better luck with it than me. After I gave it to him, I noticed the slate had a small chip in it.  Oh well, he was tickled with it.

I have to agree that that piece of Bocote is EXCELLENT!  The Cocobolo are also over the top.   And that is from Jerry is "the World's Most Interesting Man"

Mike is probably out using those new calls so I will answer.  They are very similar to a flute.  You use your fingers to cover the individual holes and blow across the center hole.  Some people put a cork in the center hole and use one of the larger holes around the outside, but most think that you don't get as good of sound when you play them this way.

  Thanks a bunch, Jerry. Turkey flute, ah?  That Mike sure is a good feller...  he even whittles out a matching corn dog stick to go along with the custom call.

LOL! Jerry nailed it. Some of them you can put your lips on the center hole and work it like a wing bone call too.
