Bills Custom Calls

Couple weeks ago i picked up some red oak burl I had heard how this stuff will crack as it is drying so i kept an eye on it I seen it started to crack so i decided to cut it in to call blanks and wax it up and thought I would share it with you folks

End results was a trip to the ER
I took the end of my thumb off on the table saw when a piece of the wood kicked back
I am still not 100% sure what exactly happened but it happened and it could have been a lot worse then it is and the ER Dr said I need to see a specialists and said tomorrow won't be to soon

Born and raised in the southern highlands of Appalachia, I'm just an ol' country boy who enjoys calling coyotes... nothing more, nothing less.

Bill, sorry to see you got injured.  I've never really felt good about using a table saw to break down burls, or stock for turning.  Preferred using the band saw.  Much safer.  Too much stress in the burls and such from drying.  The case hardening stresses are forming in the pieces as they are drying.  Creates a tendency for them to "pinch" on the blade.
You have to learn to listen to those little warning voices in your head too.  Seems everytime we ignore them, something bad happens?  Heal up fast.

Dave

Bills Custom Calls

This is a fine example of your never to old to learn

Dave those voices in my head have gotten me in trouble in the past
This time it could have been a different voice

I go to the specialist tomorrow and I am sure he will have some stern instructions for me
yes I will listen to him the extra strength vicodin they have me on kinda keeps me down
