Gotta Problem....

As most of you know, Texas has been in an extreme drought since last Fall. I have a small lease (400+ acres) 30 minutes away from my front door. Fortunately, my lease is blessed with 3 good size stock tanks that are fairly deep, so attracting and keeping deer hasn't been a problem. However, due to a lack of rain, natural browse and forage, is little to none. Landowner and I have placed several feeders on the property this year in order to help out the local deer herd. Otherwise..... they would probably starve.

Anyways..... seems the corn and protein feeders have attracted more than just deer..... 




























Seems I need to brave the heat and go out and knock down a few.

  I don't understand, whats the big deal ? you'll just be eating pork instead of venison  I just hpoe they don't dig up your taters and eat your green beans  now that would be devastating!

I think this weekend I'll try and thin the herd. Went through all my trail camera's, and unfortunately these SOB's are unpredictable. Seem to come around once every 3-4 days and stay no more than 10 minutes before clearing out.

I'll need to scout the property this weekend, but judging the direction they're coming, I know they're bedding down around the big stock tank....

May have to scrounge around and see if I can get my hands on a hog trap.

Just placed a hog trap on the property. 5' wide x 8' long, and 4" high. Let's see how long it'll take to trap a few.

No hogs last night, but we did get a coon.

My wife's Uncle visiting from Mexico tagged along and helped me setup the traps yesterday.

When I was a young lad, I visited kin folk that lived in the great Smokey Mtns. of NC. Had an opportunity to eat all manner of critters that swam, crawled, and flied.... to include coon. I'll pass on varmints aside from tree rats!

Ironically, my wife's Uncle was all set to skin that coon and dig in. 
Folks from the deep interior of Mexico apparently aren't squeamish on where their protein comes from.

Back in the day, we used to freeze the coon bodies after we skinned them and then sold them to a buyer from Lima for $1.00 each.  I never tried it, but it sure looks greasy to me.

I have eaten coon The young ones are best yes they are greasy Trim as much fat off the meat as possible then throw the fat away and put the meat in a pan on top of the stove and boil for about a half an hour then fry,bake or grill to your liking

I have never eaten Coon either but down in Georgia the Black population around our Hunt club consider them to be a delicacy along with Chittlings, looks like you may have a small fortune just waiting to be exploited.  cc

We just caught the first wild hog on trail camera. Everyone wants to be the first to kill it. They been taking over middle Tennessee for some time now.

Post some pictures of the hogs caught in the traps.

I don't know anything about hogs but I do hear they like to move almost constantly. Do you suppose they have moved towards where the rain fell last week? I know it wasn't much rain but hey.
