Yote Yoda and I made a late afternoon trip to another new farm we just got to hunt over in Anderson County, Ky., about 10 miles from Lawrenceburg.   We had looked the farm over another day and knew it was a perfect wind to hunt one particular hay ridge with wooded strips up the hollows bordering the field.  We got set up about 6:45 with Yote Yoda watching the right side of the ridge and I watched the left and did the calling with my FX-5.  We both keep squeakers mounted on our AR's, and we have a little signal that alerts the other guy that customers are on their way.  After announcing our presence with a few howls on my Cronk buffalo horn howler and Yote Yoda's cowhorn howler by Bearmanric, we waited a few minutes and just watched, and then let the FX-5 give them a little serenade of "Coyote Group", a dandy new sound offered by Foxpro.  Watched about 5 minutes and then went into Coyote & Fawn, then Fawn Distress, and toggling back and forth between those two sounds for about 5 or 6 minutes.  I saw 5 coming on my side of the ridge so I gave Yote Yoda the squeaker signal, and by the time they reached the ridge top leading to us, the two in front were about 125 yds out.  I hit the Sceery coaxer a couple of quick squeaks and they put on the brakes.  Yote Yoda and I have always had a firm rule; shoot when you can kill a coyote, and it was just coincidence that we both squeezed one off as close to simultaneous as you could ask for.  The other three headed back for the woods, and no coaxing would make them return.  It was nearly dark anyway so we gathered up our stuff and went down to see what we had killed.  I was reasonably sure that Yoda had killed the big male and I had killed the female.  Wrong!  Yoda had killed a 42 1/2 lb. female and I had killed a 32 1/2 lb. male that was obviously last year's crop. The big female was one of the prettiest I have ever seen and she is a big old gal with a pretty coat.  The young male had a pretty coat himself with his hackles raised about as much as I have ever seen.  Yoda carried our gear and old Possumal drug the coyotes up to a big rolled bale to take some pictures.  I skinned the big female when I got home and the devastation done by Yote Yoda's 53 grain Hornady Superperformance was nearly unbelievable.   I know a lot of guys don't think the .223 is enough rifle for coyotes, especially some of the big ones we have around these parts, but she looked like somebody hit her with a 300 mag.   All in all, it was one of the most exciting hunts we have had, as the setting was gorgeous with the sun lighting the sky up real dark red, like a winter evening. Ah, it was dandy!
