one of those awesome days that suck a golden weenie? Well that was my mind this morning. We had the first frost of the year, so I decided I would go hit one of my favorite farms.

The first stand on this farm has you facing the east, so the sun is always in your eyes. The trick is getting in there before the sun gets high enough to clear the trees. Well this morning I didn't quiet make it, but I decided to go ahead and call it anyway. Now before I any further I need to say, the farmer has two horses that call this pasture home and wouldn't you know they would be standing at the gate as I walked up. So I started out with a couple of long howls, then waited a couple of minutes. Tuned in the ole crack pipe for a little rabbit and blues and within 1 minute I see a coyote standing on the other side of the pasture. He was just standing there looking for the coyote and rabbit. Now about this time the horses decide they want to show their behinds and start running back and forth within 30 yards of where I am sitting. Now this makes the coyote nervous and I can tell he is getting ready to take off. So I settle in and just really can't get comfortable and steady. But I chanced it at about 200 yards and I think I rushed my shot when he turned to leave. I missed him but he just jumped a little bit and didn't run off, but by the time I got another round in the chamber he was gone. Coyote 1 Man 0

So I go and make 22 more blank stands and then on the third I sit down and start crank-in out the tunes on the crack pipe. I was watching across the creek in the direction where I thought a coyote would come but that wasn't the case. I look to my right and here comes a black coyote at Mach III running right at me. Here I am gun pointing in the wrong direction, so I take the gun out of the sticks and bark at him to try to get him to stop while I am moving my gun. No luck, he keeps coming and stops at about 25 yards. I am still not ready to shoot but just as he stops he sees me move and takes off about the time i pull the trigger. One shot and a miss, so I chamber another round and as he is running off I shoot again and roll him. But he gets up and runs off. Blood everywhere but no coyote, I looked for him but couldn't find him anywhere. I know he will die no doubt.

So awesome morning as far as seeing and calling up coyotes but sucky day for killing and getting your hands on them. Coyotes 2 Man 1 maybe

Sounds like a fun day, Highest of highs  :eyebrownod:and lowest of lows :madd: some days you get the coyote, some days he gets you. But all in all its sounds like fun to me, Im sure you will get even someday.

Yea Carl but I choked the first one. All that shooting practice I have been doing and then choke it. It was on that big wide open field at the Mathis farm. The one we called the other day and the other one was across the road on the last stand we made on that side before we crossed the gravel road.

I talked to the farmer before I left and he was telling me that he had seen 2 blacks ones playing the other day. So I know there is one blacky left. That makes a total of 13 black coyotes I have called in and 8 off of this one farm.

You don't miss that often but it sucks when you do, was you using the Savage ? I think I got a good load worked up for the Kimber and will take it on the next Coyote hunt , The 243wizzum has bee right on this year , I 'll be leaving going back down to Georgia Saturday for another week. Maybe the week after that we can get in a hunt or two. Carl

I would be thrilled to have a morning like that.  Here in these WV mtns if I even see a coyote on 25% of the stands I feel lucky.  Sounds like you definatly didnt get bored.

Hmmm let's see 25%, that would be 1 out of every 4 stands you would see a coyote. I wish I could see a coyote on 25% of my stands. Right now I am running about 1 coyote for every 6-8 stands, 16.6%. Which is pretty good for around here but it starts going down hill the later it gets in the season.
