The Big Dawg has really gotten the fishing bug. Trout, Bass, Catfish, Carp, he don't care, just likes to fish. So, I figured I would buy a boat and hit the local lakes for some Crappie. He thought this was a great idea so I started shopping.

First I hit the local classifieds and craigslist to see what I could find. Some good deals for sure, but I don't care for your junk motors so I hit the local marine shop and Cabelas. Holy crap! 12 foot jon boats are $800 - $1000! Since I'm kinda tight, I started perusing the garage to see what I had. So I gathered up some lumber and hit Ace for what ever else I needed.

This is what I ended up with. Got about three hundred bucks in it.

In progress

Completed

Picked up a MinnKota 55lb thrust trolling motor on sale at Cabelas to scoot it around. Getting it titled this week and hopefully hitting a lake Saturday!

What'd you use? Looks like pine? Maybe Southern Yellow.
Damn you did a good job. I'm ready to own a boat but I'll never be able to afford one. But I got saws and drills :eyebrow:

16 foot, weighs about 200 pounds, so they say, seems like less. Made out of 1/4 inch luan and 1/2 inch plywood. The wales and runners are 3/4 inch pine.

Got the plans here http://duckworksbbs.com/plans/jim/jonsboat/index.htm Nothing is 16 foot, used rabbet joints.

Jim, thought you had a boat?

Real nice! We got some real craftsmen on this site.    :congrats:

My BIL builds small boats. He is working on a small outboard runabout right now with steering wheel, enclosed bow and other bells and whistles.   Way more than I could do.

True dat!  I can't tell you how impressed I am.

When it comes to such work I am a klutz.  I don't know how, don't do it well on the few things I do know how to do, and so seldom finish projects that I've learned not to start them.  So, Msmith, you are my hero!

There's nothin to it really. If I can do it, a caveman can, lol. We have yet to see if it floats. The Big Dawg will be the guinea pig, er I mean test pilot.

Your humility is admirable, but don't go so far as to deprecate your skills.  The things we are gifted to do well and easily we assume are easy for everyone, and tain't so!
