The cop put the cased rifle on the trunk of his car, then forgot it was there and drove off.     Sounds normal. 

I have done that with so many things that I made myself a rule that I have not violated in several years:  NEVER put anything on the roof or trunk of a vehicle, but put it on the hood or windshield.  I don't put it on the ground either, but on the hood in front of my eyes.

My list includes a speargun, a bow and a fishing vest full of fly gear.
