Are you boys still hunting coyotes this time of year? If you are what calls work the best?

I'm not...too busy watching the river levels getting ready for the spawn. But pups are dropping in most regions, and pup distress sounds work good this time of year.

Same here! I am done till Sept other than the few ADC calls I get here and there. Pups are about to drop here, some probably already have.

If I get a call though. Coyote vocals and pup distress wines and Cries inside a core area of a denning site with put you right in the action though!

Coyotes have about shut down vocally here in the last couple weeks. I did hear one coyote raising hell at something tonight though I could hear it inside the house so I had to walk out on the porch!. Must have been something inside there core area to get him all stirred up like he was!

Pretty much shut down right now, but will start again the middle of May. I use pup distress and   yips and howls. I also use a dog which works well that time of year.

We never shut down here as far as hunting coyotes. Lately I've been duped, shot and missed one, shot hit one and it got away,  and one came in so fast and left I didn't get a shot . We got a nice bobcat last week and called in close 2 different grey fox. Fox are out of season so we let them go. Hunting has been tuff lately !

Same here! The place I deer hunt is a nice sized farm and the guy wants all of them critters dead!

Thanks for the tips guys. I hope to get out in a few weeks after work slows down some.

One last question for keekee! What is a core area? I am new to this stuff so I have no idea what that is! Sorry

Mike,

A core area is the area or safe zone a coyote sets up inside there home range. Coyotes always have a core area inside there home range. Its a place they feel safe and sound in. During denning season that core area is right around the den site. And the core area also shrinks allot. Coyotes are more territorial during denning season and will defend that core area against other coyotes or other intruders.

Here when the pups start dropping or get real close the Coyotes are not vocal at all. They don't do much howling at all. Now after the pups get a little older that will change. And the adults will start communicating with the pups. As the pups grow and start to wonder away from the den site and the adults feel comfortable leaving them there for longer periods the pups will communicate vocally with the adults from around the den site. Sort of like keeping tabs on them. This is a great time to be out locating and taking in all the diffrent vocalizations!
