THO Game Calls

You probably gave about 10 people heart attacks with that one - very nice info and a great link.

(he posted how to make trumpet calls on cco - a BIG no no)

So, is CCO becoming one of "those" places now.

THO Game Calls

Not at all Matt -

We are not picking on CCO - but the Guild.  CCO is a great board with a lot of very very talented callmakers.  If you look at the list of who won at the NWTF show this year, you will find most of them were CCO members.

The trumpet issue has been going on now for years - they are a very exclusive call - and the secrets to making them have been closely guarded.  Some of these calls go for 4 figures.  So the folks who make them are pretty tight lipped about their making.

Oh Well.
This is the First I've heard of me being on the Poo list. If it ticked someone off..... I could care less.
Come on it's not like I'm giving away national secrets over there. I thought we all were to love each other and help out our brother call makers. RIGHT?

Besides Trumpets ain't that hard to make.

THO Game Calls

Just funning with you Clint - but did you see the numbrer of hits your post had?   If you search the forum, you will find dozens of request for info on making trumpets - and all of those post get side tracked or ignored.

The information you provided was very good and very interesting.

There is no LIST - again - just joking with you.

BUT - you could hear the bodies dropping all the way here in NH LOL

I don't care about makiang trumpets - I just want to be a good predator call maker - but sometimes I think it's good that they Turkey Croud get's it stuff handed to them in a tea cup - They are after all the ones who called me a GOBLIN for wanting a separate Predator Call class in their competitions.  Instead, they gave us nothing - IF they think that is going to be overlooked - they have another thing coming.

So what exactly is a trumpet call? Does it call trumpets?

What would be a neat thread would be one that shows 'all' the different kinds of calls, what they are used for, and how, in general terms, they are used.

or maybe I'm the only one who never heard of some of these things  Trumpet, Pot, Yelper, and how exactly do ya use turkey wing bones to make a call?

I'm not lookin for trade secrets, just ignorant of all the different types of things that folks have come up with to call all different kinds of wildlife.

Stu (Todd looks around for agents from the "Featherd Crowd"), Your not going to believe this but I think its perty much a "lip squeak" amplifier.  :roflmao:

They just suck on it, to make noise, and they are so bad at consistancy, that they need a lip stopper to remind them where they need to be to "suck" on the call.  :roflmao:

Sorry to you fellow turkey hunters, I'm just having fun.

Matter fact had a phone call from a feller once that was going to make a predator call trumpet, and it was just like the turkey one, just a different name......................  :roflmao: :roflmao:

Hhahahaha Todd....MMuuuHHHHhahahahahahahahaah...shame he didn't go through with it......

I went to the turkeycall.com site on there & them fellas are mighty proud of their stuff. While it looks nice I don't see me spending $35-$40 on a slate call when a little practice on a production call gets the same results. Those trumpets are nice too but I guarantee one wouldn't be nearly that long after I took it to the field once!! :roflmao:  And if it did come back in one piece I wouldn't carry it again. Just seems like it would be in the damn way all the time.

But they do look nice. :eyebrownod:

THO Game Calls

Stu -

We do have to give credit where credit is due.  Some of these calls that the Turkey guys make are just incredible works of art.

Yelpers - or trumpets - or wingbones all work on the same principle - they are basically a hollow tube that you "suck" on and they produce turkey sounds - yelps - clucks and others.   You can take a drinking straw and a shotgun shell and get almost the same thing.   But they do take some getting used to to learn to play correctly.  The advantage to them is they play in all kinds of weather.  Where as a slate or glass call, or a box call will be affected by moisture, trumpets and the rest will not.

Now, some call makers have taken the yelper and trumpet to an art form.   They are probably some of the most beautiful calls make today.  Graceful lines, wonderful carving and metal work adorns many of the best.  Making a basic one is not that tough, but like anything, there are tricks to the trade.  These are closely garded secrets, as are the sources for some of the materials they are made of - Ivory for one.

Like anything else, there are only so many dollars and so many buyers for calls of this quality - so the call makers that produce them protect their investmetns.  I can't blame them.  We have all seen what has happened to the predator call market - especially with commercially available tone boards today.

One thing you will notice, is that most of these calls, especially the trumpets and yelper are not advertised on call making sites - at least by the big names.   They are sold privately or they are calls that were ordered.  Some of these makers have waiting list 2 or 3 years long.

As a call maker, I can appreciate the work and skill that goes into making them, and I can understand the secrecy that surounds their construction.

You have no idea of the amount of hate mail I have recieved from call makers about my turtorials  -

On the other hand, they have spurned a whole cottage industry that used to be held by Lorren Reese - how many lanyard makers are there now?

For some, it is the art and the craft that are important - for some, it is the money that can be made from it.   Sad but true.

You could say the same thing about $25 and up predator(locator) calls, $100 and up duck calls, $75 and up owl hooters, etc. I understand why you said it, but you could say it about any style call you can buy at Walmart. Saying you wouldn't pay the price for a handmade call is like saying you wouldn't buy your wife a real diamond ring when a cubic zirconium serves the same purpose.  :nofgr:

:roflmao: Funny Cypress, and just had that exact exchange of words with a fella a week ago, but very good point.

I really love the art, creativity, and craftsmanship.... To me it actually adds to the experience and is an encouragement to learn more. I really do wish there was not this division among the different types of call makers. You'd a thunk the greatest division would be between guys involved in the same market, but from what I've seen here, that don't hold water.

I guess that at the end of the day..... there are people and there are craftsman/artists and segmentation is more a function of the type of person than anything else.

Glad I'm here

Studabaka, you said it right. It's not the callmakers that make a particular type of call but a few individuals that ruins it for the rest of the group. Not all turkey callmakers support the Guild, and we don't want to be lumped into the group that does. Brian.
