I did make a few calls but I had been interested in making pens for quite some time. It is very relaxing & rewarding at the same time. I made this set for a co-worker. He had a nice gold plate engraved & attached it to the piece of walnut that I cut out & routed off the edges. I put some felt on the underside to hide the screw holes for the pen funnels & to keep it from scratching the desk.  He then gave it to his Dad on Father's Day. He was tickled to death to get it & set it right in the middle of his big cherry desk.  Those are rifle clips too. :eyebrow:

Well, you have done something on your lathe that I have never done on mine.  I have looked at some of the pens that have been made and think that I can appreciate what it took to make them look like that.  Those look as good as any I have seen.

Those look great Glen. If I had a desk job I would have to have a set of them for the desk.  :yoyo:

Very cool !! Good job. I'm sure he'll display those proudly.

I moved the topic in here, I'm just trying to keep the How to sections for tutorials and how to questions.

Kewl!  :yoyo:
So without laughing at me...is that what you guys are referring to when you say pen blanks?
I've always wondered that.

"Picked up some pen blanks today".  What the heck is he talking about.

Jim,

Those would be made with pen blanks.  You have a piece of wood that is usually 3/4 inch square.  Make for great pens (like these), but at least to me, don't make a very good looking call.

Jim, pen blanks are what your pen is shooting when it doesn't write.

By the way, Hamer, nice pens!

Corny, I know.  But hey, I live in Indiana (where corn is king).

^^^ :roflmao:  and ya those are awesome pens

HaMeR

Thanks guys!!

Pen blanks. :rolleye: :roflmao: :roflmao:

Pen blanks also come in 5/8 & 3/4" round stock which is what those were turned from. All that is missing on those would be a few grooves & a reed & I could ****SELL EM OVER THERE AS PREDATOR CALLS****.

If things work out I'll be able to put a label under the finish with 2 lines. I'm gonna practice on a few for the Family reunion coming up in July as door prizes. I also have 4 nice birdseye maple pens done with the gold rifle clips as gifts to some net Friends.

I would never laugh at ya Jim!!  :rolleye:  Maybe snicker some or totally bust a gut but never just laugh.  :roflmao:

Been working on 10 pens for our Family Reunion this coming Saturday. They all have the *2007* center band & there will be 6 or 7 different woods. Here's the 1st 5. Number 6 took a dump on me. :laf: :laf: I got a little more creative by turning a bead or two on the plain ones. The ones with nice grain didn't get anything. I didn't want to take away from the grain in them. No labels on these. I'm not happy with the way it's working right now. Plus I'm trying a different finish. Hope you like em!!

#2-- Afzalia Burl

#3-- Purple heart (?) :laf:  It will turn a darker purple with age.

#4-- Bloodwood I believe

#5-- Diagonal cut Bocote

I'm going to bypass the "shooting blanks" comment...I did have some thoughts though (smirk)...and go right into saying...

Great job Glen. You're doing a fine job with a unique idea.
