[THO Game Calls]

Well, here it is.  I posted this because of what has been said on the Are Custom Predator Calls Overpriced thread and because of the comments made on HM about custom calls and their sound.




all of these calls have been mangled or otherwise disected.  They all still work, but each and every one of them has been taken appart and measured, reeds mic'ed and all kinds of stuff.   

The wooden open reed on the left is really a Primos Regulator 10 in a body I turned for it.  The multi colored yellow and red call in the center is one of Arky's.  You'll see Tweety's. Crit R Calls, JS, Lohman, Primos, and Quakerboy calls in that collection, along with a Tally Ho Sceery's, and Haydals.

The whole Idea is, unless you know what you are competing against, there is no way to actually compete.   I don't think this is a game where you can compete against yourself completely because sound of the call is more than 90% of the battle.

Here are some interesting facts from my notes on these and some other calls I have

The Sceery Course Cottontail uses an LVDR 002 reed.  The Snowshoe hare usese an MVDR 002  The cottontail uses an MV 002

The primos still cottontail uses an MV 002

Both fawn bleats use the LV 002

the three wood Lohmans use MV 002 in two ofhtem, and an LV 002 in the other. 

The Haydals Govt Cottontail uses an MVDR 002

The Primos Regulator 10 uses a .010 mylar reed

The Tweey uses a .010 mylar reed

The long range tweety is actually a double reed with the top reed being .010 and the bottom reed being ,014

The Thumper uses a .020 Duralar reed (it's black)

As does the Tally Ho

The Crit R Call uses a .010 mylar reed

While the JS Critr Distress uses a very narrow .014 reed

Now, what does all this mean to us as call makers?

Well, there seems to be a lot of call companies that like the double reeds and the MV 002, which has a habbit of getting raspier the more you get on it - and there is a distinct difference in tone and raspyness between the doubles and the single.  Maybe that is why you hear some guys say they like the sounds of the store bought calls better than the customs?  They are used to that raspy sound that the double reeds and the MV 002 make.

When it comes to the open reeds, if you find a lot of guys like the tweety calls, or the crit r calls, studying the width of the reed, its thickness, the shape and slope of the tone board, the depth and width of the air channel all can help us make a call that sounds better than the original. 

The other thing I think we can all do, is to get our hands on some of the animal recordings of REAL animals.  JS has many and they will serve well to guide us in makeing a realistic sounding call.

Anyway, I thought this might be interesting to the call makers here, and help them with choosing reeds,  and show one way to go about beating your competition.  Weather it be the other call makers or the big guys like Primos, Lohman and the rest.

I do the same thing Al! I got two boxes of calls some in pieces some put back together, heck I got a couple setting on the shop table now...lol and thanks for sharing the info Al! Interesting!

It pays to check them all out! It helps us learn and be better call makers!

They must be talking to Cam alot Stu. If he gets something new, with in days there are parts missing where he took it apart to "fix" it.... I on the other hand take pics so I know where the parts go when reassembling.

Very informative and with very worthwhile information.  I have played (took apart) with some of the calls you mentioned, but your listing is much more complete.

Very well said Al. I have well over 300 calls in my collection that have been studied and studied again.


Brent, that is the only time I've ever posted anything there. Although, I try to keep up with the things happening in all call making circles. I didn't post to stir anything up. At the same time, I shouldn't get hammered for doing it either. I post for people to see they have options to the "Walmart Specials" or to their forum's supposed "Callmaking Gods".
