That is the great debate.....we really were not sure. It had bluish tints to it's head and those little red things on it's neck, but had a full fan. Either way, I am proud of it. My next one will be a long beard and I don't need to shoot anymore jakes. As the guy I was hunting with said......."as hard as you might try, you won't be able to get that beard to taste good".  :sneer:

Born and raised in the southern highlands of Appalachia, I'm just an ol' country boy who enjoys calling coyotes... nothing more, nothing less.

I agree w/ Al, the tail feathers sure do look like a mature tom.

What happens up north here, if we have a hard winter the snow and ice do a number to their beards.
Never heard of the mite, thats some good info.

HaMeR

I've never heard of the mites either but I was told last year thier berds can break off if they get wet & freeze. The tips end up brown when this happens. I believe you shot a Tom Joe!!  :laf: :laf:

Seriously,, that is a Tom Joe.   But no matter what,, it's still a trophy you should be proud of.  :congrats: :congrats:

How long was the beard?

It was exactly 4" long...........
4"..........? Pec...uhh........ Spur? That was mature.  :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:
Just kiddin ya.

I wondered if he had little bumps for spurs or what?
That would tell a lot about the age of a bird.
If it were a bearded hen which it is clearly not. It would have eggs and or little yellow yolks inside seen clearly when you cleaned it and it does something to their hormones. A bearded hen on my farm has been seen walking along an old road and just laying an egg and walking away, like she does not know what to do with it. I had heard of this before and actually seen it happen 3 years ago. While bowhunting turkeys.
I am not picking on your bird Joe I am just curious I would shoot it this year for sure.
