I made a Pin Chuck today from an oak dowel and used it twice to make some barrels for the calls. It worked great. Have any of you ever done this and what results have you had? I am planning on making 3 from aluminum for the different sizes I use most often.

Blacky if I understand you right I think you are talking about jam chucks on a lathe. They will work fine for you I have many made out of aluminum for odd size things I turn. But most of the barrels I turn are ether turned on a pen mandrel or a 5/8 mandrel. They are much more accurate and alot less chance of getting of center.

Troy, a Jam Chuck and a Pin Chuck are two different items if I understand it right. I have been wrong many times before.

I found a drawing of a "PIN CHUCK" online and it is a rod with a flat spot on it where a pin is inserted and when the lathe begins turning it locks the piece in place and holds it snug.

If I am wrong on this, please give me examples of the two in your opinion.

I guess it could be different terminology depending on who is writing it.

After writing this I went back and found the site with the drawing. Scroll down the page until you come to the Pin Chuck.  http://www.fholder.com/Woodturning/tips.htm     Let me know if this is what you are talking about.

My brother in law made me one , but I have not got a chance to try it yet. I think John said he made his own out of a piece of round stock and just used a side grinder to make the flat. Then used a piece of welding rod for the pin
