My son's first deer

I know it's not huge but it is a trophy!! Just a little 4 pt.

He is finally old enough to go out for the youth hunt. Well the first time out this is what he got I'm pretty proud of him!

It was 100 yard shot and he drilled him good.

This was the first year he was old enough to deer hunt with a gun. So I took him out for the youth hunt.

The property I hunt had just got done with some logging so we didn't know where to sit we wandered around for awhile trying to decide where to sit. All the blinds are kind of screwed up do to the logging. So we decided to use a pop-up blind. Got set up in what we thought would be a good spot back in the woods. Well after sitting for a couple hours not seeing anything but squirrels and it was starting to get dark in the woods we decided to go sit in the shack on the edge of the field for the last 15 minutes of shooting light. Corey wanted to sit there to begin with but I steered him away from that spot because the corn is still standing and the only shot is down the driveway about 20 yards wide. I sat there last weekend for the early doe season and could not get a shot because they crossed it to fast. Well wouldn't you know it after only being in the shack for 5 minutes this guy steps out at the 100 yard marker and just stands there. Corey leveled off with my .50 caliber muzzle loader and dropped him so we thought! We got out of the shack started walking down there and it got up and ran away stumbling.

As hard as this deer seemed to have been hit there wasn't near as much blood as we expected. Just little drops. Now it's to dark to see, time to get the lantern fired up. Well ten minutes later were back on the trail, not finding much blood. The whole time I'm thinking how can that thing be hit hard enough to put him down, stumbling falling on his face with every step and there not be blood everywhere. Well about 30 yards later it was every where. 20 yards more and there he was        

After seeing where he hit that deer I'm really surprised it was able to get back up, right in the shoulder blade, that little spot that normally drops them in there tracks! 

After a few pics he got a lesson in field dressing and did very well with a little help from dad.

Now he's gonna get a lesson in butchering.

This is defiantly going to be one of those things I will remember for the rest of my life. I think I'm more excited than he is!

100 yards up the driveway right across from the shack we were sitting in. I thought about dragging the deer up there to get some pics  for HaMeR.
