When Al and I went to Cabela's I bough two boxes of Hevi-shot thinking they would be good for coyotes.  I have since learned that there are several kinds of hevi-shot.  The ones I purchased had a picture of a duck on the top of the box and on the flap it says "heavier than steel".  I got one box of 3 inch No. 4s and one box of 3 inch B shot.  These were $22.95 per box on special.  I am now thinking I bought the wrong ones and should have got the ones with the turkey picture on the box???    I looked at the dead coyote loads, but they were 32.95 per box, a little out of my price range.  I don't know anything much about these so what do you guys think.  Should I take these back.  It's about a two hour drive to Cabela's for me.  Or will these be OK for coyotes??

Most places around here don't allow returns on ammo...I'm not sure about Cabela's. You can just send them to me and I'll whack some ducks / geese for ya :innocentwhistle:
Seriously though, I'd call before driving two hours to find out you can't return them.

31/2 dead coyote loads is 27.00 at uncle lees or wing supply ky  they might be able to ship unclelees.com i think
my goal: do as much as I can, as fast as I can, for as long as I can, and at the end of the day if I'm not satisfied I will be to wore out to care

The #4 shot sounds like it could be used for turkeys.   The B shot (.17 caliber I think)  is pretty close to BB and should be OK for coyotes.  My 2 cents.

i with what semp said

Those are the Hevi-Steel loads. You need a choke that will shoot steel shot. You'll blow chunks out of a regular choke shooting those shells. I saw those shells in the store here and almost bought them, till I read the fine print. :wo:

Now let's take a moment and think about that statement, Jim.   How much ya got tied up in your R15? Scorpion caller? Shotgun?  Camo?  Licenses, permits, gas to the LBL, Cabin rental, etc?   Your talking $10 more per box or $1 per shell.  You are not going dove hunting and burning dozens of shells.  Get my point?

Thats how I look at it!

Semp,
I guess you got a point there!  I just don't want to ruin my choke tube.  I would also like to find out if the shot in these is the same as in the other hevi-shot loads.  Al seems to think it is.  If so I will use it.  But if this stuff is some kind of heavier steel shot then I would prefer to not use it and hopefully exchange it for the Dead Coyote stuff I guess.  You are correct though.  With the number coyotes I have been seeing recently a box of ten should last me a couple years!!  I guess I need to contact the company and ask them!

I believe the density of the shot pellet is exactly the same.......I believe the load is a little different but will smack a coyote just as dead. The choke and shot combination are listed on the web site.
Answer this for me fellas......When Remmington Hevi shot first came out.......that is all there was.
Since it has changed to just Hevi shot......and they put umpteen loads for different game animals on the market.....What has changed? The marketing? Or is each pellet some sort of animal tracker......Like a duck load sniffs out a duck......A coyote load sniffs out a coyote?
I think the loads you bought are going to impress you and at a cheaper price cause it has a duck on the box. My2cents

I'm just wondering if the Hevi-Shot and the Hevi-Steel are made out of the same stuff? I was checking their website but it dosen't say.

Keep in mind Jim has the duck load not the hevi steel.......
But I was wondering the same thing......I have done some math on weight but the info I have is not of the same load for the hevi steel  I will do the math when I get the right load info and density will be easy to figure... :eyebrow:

hevi shot is a tungsten/iron   the heavi steel is just steel mixed with something to make it heaver with still being cheaper than hevi shot....i use the hevi shot dead coyote with a pattern master choke with no wear issues and great patterns

topdawg

hevi shot is about 10% heavier than lead and about 50% heaver than steel i think...the heavy steel is just a few % heavier than steel

topdawg

if you can get your hands on lead BB i think you would be better off in my opinion.. the hevi shot and the steel load are good but the one thing lead does that they do not is lead will flatten out which add knockdown to it  it all personal preference

I disagree.......I have seen turkeys killed with this stuff at 45yds impressive Smackdown indeed :eyebrownod: and I can guarantee you the same load of lead the bird would have lived.
Hevishot has a devastating impact like none I have seen on game. It costs to much but I must say it is some kinda knockdown like I have never seen with lead.

Guys,
The stuff I have is not hevi-steel.  They are the duck loads.  I think Al is right, it is the regular hevi-shot pellets loaded to 1450 fps with 2 3/8 oz. of shot.  The turkey loads go at 1050 with 2 oz. of shot.  I will try to call them on Monday and get the low down.  I got one box of No. 4 s to use here in WV at night since that is what we are limited to.  I'm hoping I can use the box of Bs at LBL???  If I decide to use the shotgun any.  Or I can use them in WV in the daytime.  I just don't want to ruin my choke tube.  So I guess more research is required.  Thanks guys for all the responses.

the hevi shot will travel farther with more energy....i do agree with all i use them on turkeys and love them but on turkeys all you want is for a pellet to go through the head and neck...now i have jump shot a turkey with i think 4s and body shot it ...pellets went strait through and after flying about fifty yards if fell out dead, but if i would of hit it with lead at that range might not of made it through the feathers....here is what i am trying to say 50 yards and in lead BB.s great 50 yards and out hevi shot ....the ideal load first two BB and the last Hevi shot lol

you can use the Bs at lbl should work great ..... the hevi shot 4s will work just be ready to put another round into it if it dont just bang flop

Here's another $.02 worth.    :nono:   I'm using Remington HD 3 1/2 inch BB loads.   They are $30 a box but Remington has a $15 per box rebate through January 31.   I'm also using a Briley super full turkey choke.   I've only shot a few rounds but I haven't seen any damage to the choke tube.
