     One easy way to tell the difference is to draw an outline around the track.When you outline a dog track,it will make an almost perfect circle.The coyote track will make a more oblong oval.

Pretty clever.

I don't don't have to deal with many dogs where I am. Actually none, but here's a good way to tell the difference. I use it mostly for coyotes.

I was always told and have noticed this. 

To tell the difference between a dog and coyote track is the widths.  Like the picture showing the front and rear foot on the coyote.  The front is wider than the rear.  A dog will not have the distinction.  I think it has something to do with the front foot being bigger for swiping at the running game to knock it down during the chase.

or maybe I am thinking of elephants.

I don't worry alot whether its a dog or coyote most places I hunt if its a dog that comes in its as wild or worse than a coyote with the closest houses being many miles away dogs aren't very common
