Al, you're delving into "Al"chemy is known as an "Iron Tannate" reaction.  What you are producing is a reaction of the tannic acid in the wood, and the ferric ions absorbed by the vinegar/steel wool.   Very cool!  A fine looking call!
Oldtimers used to wrap hard maple gunstocks with metal strapping and let them sit.  It would produce a curly Q pattern in the stocks.

Yea, that is what Dave said too.  Nice looking call.  Did you seal it up pretty good so that it doesn't start to come off on your hands?  I don't know how I know about that.  (He said as he looked at his hands.    :rolleye:)

It seems I recall that you have to "neutralize" the reaction once you get it where you want it in color, to give it steadfastness.. A solution of borax and water brushed on for a couple minutes, then washed off with cold water should do the trick.  Make sure you let everything re-dry.  Otherwise there will be some issues to contend with down the road.

Thanks for the advice fellas ........shes all done and real dry before I put the finish on........ I also wore down the edges of the black some to make it appear worn and old but it does not show up in the pic real well.....I been tellin HaMer about it for some time as it went through the stages of turning it Black and keeping it that way....
I had fun making this one and will do it again soon.
