Pecan....

Anyone ever make any calls out of Pecan? I have a pretty big tree that is going to hit the ground here pretty soon. The stump is about 30" so there would be ton's of wood in it. Would anyone be interested in it? It's free you can  have it, if you come and get it.

Is it better to cut it in the winter when the sap is down or does it even matter?

Al would be correct. I did make a call out of it here recently.  I know if I got some I would want the center of where the limbs come together (crotch) that's where the wood with the nicest figure is. On a 12" diameter piece I'll cut off the sides with my chainsaw and end up with something in the 8" size.  Not sure where you live...?  The sap doesn't matter,

Where is it you live at? an are you interested in it? This tree is probably about 50 tall and 30" stump so there would be some good wood in it. How long of pieces would it need to be cut up in? I also have some black locust cut in 12" long pieces, they should be dried by now, it's been cut for about 5 years. If your intersested in it too.

I'm all the way down in middle TN.  I don't think it would be worth our trouble to cut and ship any, I sure do appreciate the thought though!  Al remembers from a call making forum I was hunting some pecan a while back. It was to pick at my dad with!  You see when I was a kid I remember my dad planting a pecan tree in the yard, dad loves pecan pie.... I mean it's his favorite food... Sooo years of planning and grooming have gone into his "baby"  yeah 40 foot baby but don't mess with it!  The tornado this spring barely missed it! LOL I just remembered there were a pair of underwear in it after the tornado hit their neighborhood. Anyway last year dad didn't get one pecan from that tree... the squirrels wore it out! He declared war this year,  (reminds me of the Silver backs  someone on here hunts) anyway Dad has shot 64 squirrels out of the tree this year.  Now you have to know he lives in a nice subdivision... he snips 'em out of the window, and has to wait until they get into a certain area where it's safe for him to shoot!  So here he is... a retired minister/sniper.. LOL slaying the neighborhood tree rats!  Here's a pic of the call I made him.
