My 8 point

I am so  I could just  right now!!! I hit an 8 point last night  can't find it anywhere!! 3 of us looked & looked to no avail. This would have been the biggest buck I've ever hit & it's gone. It has just vanished!!

Have you ever heard how the big ones can just appear or vanish as if they are ghosts?? Then it's like they were never even there & you know you weren't hallucinating!! Well I'll try to re-create things as they happened. I'm still a little bubbly over all this. 

I was setting there all strapped in,, safety 1st  ,, when out of nowhere this very nice buck literally jumps out at me from no where. He came in from my left & I literally had milliseconds to react. His head was very low as if trailing a doe,, which we didn't see,, & he was on the move. A fast trot but not a run. I had a lane to my left,, which he crossed at the speed of light,, & the one directly in front of us. This was where it got interesting. My brain overrode my body & immediately I had to hit the brakes on this one!!! I pounded him in the left front shoulder & knocked him to the ground. He thrashed for a minute or so then got up &,, yep you guessed it,, VANISHED!!!! I just wanted to  now!! Luckily Diane was with me & told me not to worry about it none. We would find it as she knew exactly where I hit it & she knew it was a good hit. Then she called my Brother & BIL to help us find him. We looked for about 45 minutes & it was real dark so we just quit for the night.


Well I went back out this AM to no avail. For some reason the blood trail was non-existent. And I know it was a hard hit as I felt it too. And now to top it all off there seems to be a conflict of interest between Diane's laptop & my camera card & the pics won't show up to put them in photobucket.  I'll figure that out tho by this evening & have some pics posted of what I could find.

Sorry to hear this Glen .  I have had white tails go over three miles with no liver left in them so I know it can be hard to find them.   The feeliing you have will only make you a better hunter as it shows you care about what you do. .  Keep looking and even if you don't find him you may find another .

That's tough!   Hope you find him.  I've had deer and coyotes run off on me from what I was sure was a good shot.  They are very tough and don't give up their lives easily!!

Had the same thing happen once. one drop of blood about a hundred yards down the trail from where I hit him and that was all. Farmer found him three days later where he had jumped over a huge brush pile into soem horseweeds and collapsed. I had hit him square in hte heart so no blood was pumping.  I imagine you did the same thing. Cut that pump station into four squares and it don't work at all.

Mine was within five hundred yards of where he was shot. Start circling and look for anything odd or out of place . Only sign might be on top of a pile of honeysuckle or weeds where he jumped over.

I also hit one dbad once and had to leave him. Coyotes found him first.  JImmie

Go Back And sweep the area Glen............One more try and see if you can just find him......Forget the Blood and just run a grid looking for him......I know it sucks .........I been there.....I hope it works out for ya.

Well guys here is "the rest of the story."  I did pound an 8 point & we couldn't find him. I know I hit him a ton because my truck weighs more than that & we were travelling along at 55MPH. I did have my seat belt on. He did appear 1st in the left lane & I did put the brakes on him AND the truck in the lane right in front of me. I did hit him in the front shoulder. He wrapped around the truck & crushed the door in then he somehow got off the road & into a yard. I pulled off the road & the car behind me told me the deer was thrashing around on the ground in that yard. Diane did see the impact & was shook up for a few seconds but then regained her composure & proceeded to search the floorboard for the phone.  Which is exactly where it ended up at.    She did call the State Patrol, my Brother, & BIL to look for it. We searched for about 45 minutes & quit. Went back this AM but we think it hit that big old cornfield which was the closest cover. And I DID FEEL THE HIT!!   :roflmao: :roflmao:

As for the camera card & Diane's laptop conflict of interest,,,,    I purposely withheld posting the pics until two certain members responded here. Which they have now done.

Sorry Frogman!! I tried to PM everybody Barry & Al fooled but with all the phone calls to get things straightened out I apparently missed a few folks. As for the truck,,, they have to keep making parts for her til 2011 so it's all good. After all,, it's just a truck.

I'm glad you all approved. I tried to write collision like a hunting story as best I could.    

I was pleasantly surprised by the minor amount of damage. I thought for sure when his head disappeared there would be antifreeze all over the road. He was a nice buck that had what appeared to be 8-10" G1's & 6-8" G2's. Nice tall rack for sure.
