Ohio drought.

I seen Bill posted in the shout box the other day about the rain we were getting. Made me & the Mrs go take a couple pics of the river I've lived along for 50 years now. She's runnin a mite low nowadays. Hopefully this week's rains will bring her back to life again. I've never seen it this low.

This is a center support for a bridge that was torn out several years ago. The water should be at least up to the bottom of the concrete.



Same pic. I thought the B&W was cool. Kinda goes with the Fall season I thought.  


The ripples in the foreground I've never seen. The fallen tree on the far bank should have water up at least to the middle of it.


The gravel bar on the right is about a foot hight than the other 3 you can see. I've fished off that gravel bar before but the water was always at least ankle deep on it.

I was at my dads this weekend and a local fishing hole called snakey point was lower than I have ever seen it. The average depth of Snakey Point is 8 feet. I could see dry ground for a lot of the impoundment. I will have to see if my sister can take pis of it and I will post them.

I know it's not just here slag. A lot of folks are experiencing well below water tables.

I haven't been North of Dover Dam in a while,but my first thought when I seen these pics of the river is they are holding the water back for the lake as long as the temps are so nice for the fishing  
I don't know but that just comes to mind

Speaking of dry I walked through the swamp the other day to only have  dust kick up around my feet

We'll be getting some much needed rain tomorrow.  We are 15 1/2 inches below normal for the year.

I'll run up that way tomorrow & check it out. Haven't been out around Atwood Lake since early summer this year. Tappan Lake has been down somewhere in the 18"-24" neighborhood. The swamps down along 416 from Tusky to St Rt 36 are about dried up here as well.

Semp-- You guys are that far below normal for the year & this past spring you couldn't paddle to higher ground fast enough it seemed.

We got plenty of water up here. Mississippi is near flood stage again.
Definitely some weird stuff.

We do have 2 days of rain forecast here so that'll help. I don't know how much it will help but I know it will help.

  Being from a predominantly dry area that river looks like a lot of water to me .  Water is the most fickle thing in nature it seems .  Neat pics by the way .

W/ the warm weather we've been having; it'll probably mean that we need to mow the yard again.

Water is down here in Northwest Ohio as well. The Maumee river is about 6 to 8 inches below normal, but that is due to the fact that Independence Dam is holding it back.  When you get to the other side of the dam it is a different story.

I have not seen water in the crick all summer and my spring ran dry this year for the first time I have seen...... we have had some rain in the past couple of days and ...... still nothing from either one.....
I fear if a big rain comes....though it will be welcomed.... It will cause major slipping of the hillsides..... This year the DOT does not seem to have the $$ to build its usual fire roads, and with gun hunting opening next week folks will want to build a lot of camp fires...... I hope all will be careful out there.... even with the rain we have had it is Dangerously dry out there....

The White River is lower than I have ever seen it but the Patoka is about what it should be this time of year.


I think I read/heard that we have surpassed the record set by the 1988 drought.


Al you got a real good point. The woods are DRY it wouldnt take much to set them ablaze. For the goat roast we had buckets of water and sprayers real close, just in case.

the ground is so hard that a logn slow rain is what we need. Forcast cals for 1/2 to 3/4 inch. It is in my prayers that it comes slow.

I'll echo Al's dangerously dry comment.    It wouldn't take much to burn down the western half of Kentucky.

Eastern Ohio is dangerously dry as well. I stopped by the Dover Dam up stream from where these pics were taken & there isn't much water on either side. Further upstream & to the right in the fork is Atwood Lake. The lake is at normal level as is the spillway which runs into this river about 1 1/2 miles above the dam. Seems what little water that is running under the dam is coming from that lake.

The marker on the right shows approximately 60' to the top of the dam. I've only seen one pic of water running over the dam. 


The water should at least be up over the yellow grass next to the tan weeds.

Barry-- I remember you talking about being so dry up there last year I think it was. Under your conditions I agree this is a lot of water. On the other hand we're about starved for it here. It's been raining nice & easy since about 11AM & is supposed to do so until tomorrow night. Yes water is as fickle as a woman.

  I wish you guys all the water you need.  I find it strange with all the dams and locks and what not that your river can be so dry.  Right where my house is located we received 10 inch's of water this past 12 months and grew spectacular crops.  All the rains came when needed and none of them heavy right here.  East of me in Saskatchewan they received in some places nearer 30 inch's and over 3,000,000 acres were never seeded.  Those that were got water logged and poor crops for a result.  While working in Australia I learned about dry and the fear of fire .  There they don't even allow combines to run during some of the worst times.

I wont even park my 4 wheeler in tall grass right now......... but we did get some rain today...... I hope we get more so they might lift the burn ban........
